Clarkson Hating on DSG

Featured Replies

At the risk of getting flamed hugely, I can't help but think that those who like/own DSG refuse to accept a bad word spoken about it. . .

Personally, I'd rather have a manual regardless unless health dictated otherwise.

No flames from me. I switched to DSG because of back/leg pain, but I'd rather have DSG most of the time regardless. It's not perfect: it's very complicated (=expensive) and deosn't always get it right, but it's the best autobox I've driven, and I've driven a few. It's not as engaging as a manual box, but I'll trade a *bit* of that for the convenience and ease.

I'm switching from a vRS Manual to vRS DSG.... Each to their own I suppose.

Loving mine so far and it seems to be getting better. Some hills I'd go up before it would be in 3rd but now it's happy to be in 5th or 6th. It's the best "auto" I've driven and the paddles are awesome and are perfect for blasting though a twisty section or between roundabouts. I'm still fiddling with seating position as my knees play up but I'll get there. It's good just for the convenience side of it and it's so quick to switch to manual mode there's no delay at all. Plan your next overtake properly and there's no problem. Couple of times I've had to boot it round another car to get out of the way and it does it. No delays or lack of power it's instant. The kickdown reminds me of a slingshot be pulled back and released.

Let my mother have a go today and the last auto she drove was an XJ6 years ago and she was right at home with it. She couldn't get over how smooth and undramatic it all was. She has back trouble and nerve damage in the spine so she often gets pain down her legs too. My dad is also disabled but he loves driving when he gets the chance and I can see them getting something with DSG next time.
