Cam Belt Query

Recommended Posts

Question regarding the engine on the diesel vRS.

If the cam belt breaks will it bend valves etc or will there be no damage and it just needs re-setting up and a new belt.

Thanks

Makes a mess, change asap if you do not know the vehicle history.

All lot depends on a lot, mostly by the amount the engine was turning over in revolutions at the time the belt snapped/ broke.

A rotating engine keeps rotating when the cambelt has snapped/ broke for a little while.

Valves stop opening and closing whilst the pistons are still going up and down.

Pistons coming into contact with valves will smash piston heads, and bend valves at the very minimum, a-lot of internal damage and mayhem.

You would have to be extremely, extremely lucky to escape zero damage.

If you were extremely lucky, to cause zero damage, to answer your question, then yes, fit new cambelt, tensioners and such, and reset timing.
