The speed setting you dont mess with?

Featured Replies

Someone has contacted me for some VCDS help, and I think that they've had someone with VCDS or other software try and enable the speed warning, but instead messed with the speed setting which from memory can only be reduced.

How do I check if this has happened, as in which setting relating to speed isnt to be messed with, and if it has been what are their options (can it be fixed with VCDS) or is it a new ECU job?

I think it's that someones set winter tyres, but preparing for worst case.

What type of car?

You can reduce the maximum speed down in the Ecu but can't increase it.

A new Ecu is last resort, if it can be read with k+CAN commander, you can clone Ecu data from a good Ecu over (effactively copying all EEPROM data). This should put the speed limit back then it's just a case of coding the "cloned Ecu" to the car (normal Vcds way).

IIRC, the value is at MB 69.1 and is set at channel 18.

It cannot be fixed using VCDS as this does not allow direct writing of the EEPROM.

Could this not just be corrected with something like VDS pro and a serial cable as that can directly write to the eeprom?

No I remember several VCDS experts trying and failing and warning others to avoid anything speed related.

Anyway persons rechecked and winter tyres was set so they're all happy again. No idea which car. Member has no posts yet.

Hi Gadgetman,

I believe the solution to raising the speed limiter is available through a software called Lemmiwinks. It is a very basic software and you can find the links even on Wikipedia. It allows you to enter a positive offset to the speed limiter to increase the limit set.

There are also a lot of other engine tweaking options, but please try at your own risk! It can connect using any VAG-COM cable.

Let's get some structur into what has been written so far... :)

#1 The Speed Limit in the ECM can only be set once and downwards. Once set, it cannot be cleared or altered. The official word is "new ECU will fix this", in reality most tuners should be able to help.

#2 VDS-PRO will NOT do the job.

#3 LemmiWinks will most likely not do the job either because it's strictly for "some" ME7 ECMs, but this does not sound like a ME7 at all.

...now if you want a more detailed answer I suggest you post up some details on the year, make, model, engine or just an Auto-Scan.
