EGR valve

Featured Replies

Any one know why a egr valve should seize up?I have had it serviced regular and have done 46000 miles.

1.6tdi with 30000km

took out to see how dirty it was

the second picture, look at the inside of the ring.

sorry poor quality

Common causes are poor servicing or just the way the cars driven. If the car is generally only ever driven gently, this could lead to a lot of sooting up of the EGR. Have you pulled the EGR and tried cleaning? A soak overnight in carb cleaner or petrol will take most of the gunk off this may free the mechanism. Worth a try before the cost of a new EGR.

Mike have you thought about blanking it off and dialing it out???

I´am testing this. A friend in a Golf 1.6tdi blocked out the gases from entering the air admission.

Every 500km he gets de engine light come on and eliminates it with vagcom.

So I´am trying this, only done 300km so far.

I recently cleaned out the EGR valve on SWMBO's Leon TDI, it was probably 40% blocked with sediment. With a good soak in carb cleaner, it came up like brand new.

What worries me is that it's not just the EGR that was caked up -- the inlet manifold is the same, and I'm sorely tempted to take this off and clean this out as well. It just looks a much bigger job than the EGR by itself.

I noticed a TREMENDOUS difference in fuel economy the second the EGR valve was cleaned. After the clean, we took the Leon for a 300 run, and got 59mpg out of it.

Any thoughts on the benefits of cleaning out the inlet manifold as well? Is it worth it, or could it cause more problems than it solves.

Thanks

Mike

at least you'd know it was ok I personally wouldn't do it without taking it off first ---too risky

I think I've put some confusion in here somewhere --here's no way I was going to clean it with the manifold still in situ.

It would be removed, but it looks quite a big job, that's why I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle, especially now as the car is running so well, and the economy is so good.

Mike, is the Leon a 1.9 or 2.0?

The mileage I do, the engine light would be on every week!

Mike

I forgot to mention that he also took out the particule filter. Reason to show engine light, it wants to regenerate.

You will only gain with eliminating de EGR. Tons of people have done it on every brand.

I just testing to see how it behaves, my dads Passat tdi(1998) was easy and soo was my Renault 1.9dci ( have it blocked out since 2003 and over 130000km.

Well to me this has opened a new can of worms, the Skoda mechanic showed me a rod inside the manifold which he said was supposed to lift but as said it was seized. Now you chaps are telling and showing the exhaust pipe with differant part, we are talking about the part they replaced which iS 038131501N and gasket 069131547D. C an you tell me is this the EGR valve part?. Oh bye the the way it was at the manifold end which had the part .Thanks

Hi, in answer about servicing , its done regular by Skoda and two weeks before the valve went we had pulled our caravan over 1300 miles . As for cleaning as one photograph showed it makes me think that we are talking about something differant to whatI was showed by the mechanic.

Hi

Can't speak for the gasket but the other part number is the EGR - mine is slightly different: 038131501AN.

I know because it is written on top of the EGR and I confirmed the part number with a dealer.

These other parts you are seeing posted here are either associated parts hidden away from view or alternative ways of doing an EGR for a newer engine type. There is a guide here that is off a MKIV Golf - similar to older TDI Octavias.

Hope this puts your mind at ease.

I own a ford Mondeo St tdci. And the EGR is regular pain in the arse on these cars. Mine is a euro 4 which means when I blanked off the egr the engine management light comes on. When I placed an 8mm hole in the blank it resolved the problem of the engine light but introduced a new problem the egr was opening Moe often to account foe the reduced gas flow. When dynoed when blaned with hole it made 192 bhp without the blank and with a cleaned inlet manifold and egr it 201 bhp. It was not a big difference but the engine was far more responsive.

If I was you I would check to se if your car is euro 3 or 4 before blanking and definitely clean the manifold.

Thanks again for reply but my EGR is in the front of the engine by the manifold and again nothing like the other guys photo's ????.

Thanks.

Just off the subject a bit but still about engines, came back from trip to Dresdon and deceided to look in engine bay to see all was well. Leaning on bumper and ended up with new knee to cut a long story short, so stripping down parts is a no go area now.

Thanks again for reply but my EGR is in the front of the engine by the manifold and again nothing like the other guys photo's ????.

My picture is the tube that comes from head( your right side when looking at engine) and the small peice that actually goes into the EGR.

Now thw only thing that I´m not sure is how does it control the air from outside to recycle.

I notice on mine that the engine has less power.

My renault has 2 valves, one starts to open(recylce air) the outside air starts to close. Same %.

Anyone know how thw system works for the new CR engines.

Here's mine with an EGR delete fitted. I have an 05 140bhp Octavia DSG so will be at least a bit similar to yours. Delete pipe is wrong way round (made incorrectly......) Have since begun process to return and have refitted original which looks like the 2nd pic. EGR valve is sitting on top of the Anti-Shudder Valve off the car but picture is from the same direction that you'd see it in your car.

Delete pipe, shows where the EGR valve would be located

EGR off the car

And what mine was like with 92k miles before I cleaned it

f9ef6bb5.jpg

In the top picture showing the Delete pipe, the blanked off pipe to the right is the feed pipe from the exhaust. I did try and remove this completely and blank at the exhaust manifold end but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the pipe out. In the end with the Delete pipe being wrong I'm glad I didn't as would have meant more work to get the EGR valve fitted back in place. As far as removing the EGR it's pretty straight forwards, so long as you get a delete pipe that's made properly, and the only downside is that your CEL, orange engine, light will come on. it's possible to get this mapped out by a tuning company or you could just keep clearing the fault code through Vagcom or a code reader. Running around with the CEL on won't hurt anything though the downside is if you get another fault your CEL will already be on so you wouldn't know.
