Tank capacity 56litres ?

Featured Replies

I've been monitoring the mpg on the 1.2TSI + DSG by filling up each time (brim full). It was achieving a consistent 44mpg - all types of motoring

The other day, armed with a Tesco 5p per litre off voucher, I filled up. The forecourt is on a slope and I wanted the maximum amount and continued to fill after the clicks and it took 49litres (read the book later - shouldn't have done this ) The book also said that the capacity is 45 litres which includes the 7 litre reserve

Before refuelling, the car was not down to anywhere near the "7litre reserve" so it means that the tank is holding at least 56 litres.

With only 376 miles since last fill, using this "brim-full", the consumption was way down to 34.8mpg

Leaving the garage, the "miles to go on this tank full" said 420 miles. After about 10 miles of gentle driving, it said 425 miles.

Now, a week and 155 miles later, it still indicates full, and says 425 miles.

Has anyone else noticed a "big tank" in their Fabia

i noticed that the top half of the tank is bigger than the bottom half- so to say the needle wont move for ages after filling up, but will rapidly plumet once past half empty.

On another note, i had put in 20L via jerry can and see the needle move up 4 segments (each segment 5 lines so each line is 1L approx.

Yes I found the same thing and it was at Tesco's as well strangely. I mananged to put just over 50 litres in it, i only went past the pump cut off once and it just kept going. I had to keep that fill up off Fuelly because i got over 500 miles out of that tank full. Never had the same thing with Shells pumps so wonder if its something to do with the flow rate Tesco pumps use.

I mentioned noticing this too in another thread last week and it was pooh-pooh'ed by others - looks like I am exonerated

Why are we letting the tanks get so empty ? There will be crap at the bottom

Venting is the reason. The tank has an expansion area at the top of ~10 litres. The top of this is vented to a valve just inside the filler hole. (look inside and you will see a small nub sticking out). When the cap is on it acts against this lever opening the vent allowing for thermal expansion of a full (45L) tank. When you fill up it is possible to push this down with the nozzle opening the valve and allowing you to fill the expansion area.

I always thought the crap at the bottom of the tank was a myth. I've never seen it

In my original post, I said that I had at least 7 litres in the tank so I was not letting it get to the crap at the bottom.

Never been an issue... and I fill when the needle nears or teeters on red....never goes anywhere near dry if the reserve is in there.

It's not issue on new cars but older models need to be careful, I've seen how much sludge there is in the bottom of a fuel tank diesel is the worst, once it's in the 25% I'll fill her up again

Just wondering, won't the sludge still sink to the bottom of a full fuel tank ?

Yes but when running on empty, you'll aggitate the sludge at bottom when you re-fill

I thought the suction from the tank is always at the bottom therefore sludge really doesn't matter as its always being drained like a bath tub?!

Maybe I'm wrong? I always run my car to the red mark mainly because I never have enough to fill the tank up in one go! :p
