bit of a knock!

Featured Replies

hi just wanting to see if anyone could shed any light on my current problem.

i seem to have developed a knocking noise when braking (2 or 3 knocks)?? it isnt there all the time and only really seems to do it when i brake and turn right at the same time? i think it is coming form the drivers side front !!

could anyone please point me in the right direction as to what to look for? bearing in mind im not a very good mechanic though

cheers

Front wishbone rear bush? ARB clamp bush? Both were shot on my 150K example, £38 for a pair of each from Skoda, cheap ones don't last IMO

Jack the car up and use a pry bar to lift / lower the wishbone or ARB. Any advisories on the last few MOTs? You can get them using your V5 (logbook number) on VOSAs / DVLAs direct.gov site.

This wishbone bush took only a tap from a hammer to fall apart, the outer ring remained in the wishbone, the rubber and inner bouncing around the floor, look at yours for sepatation in the same place. It could also be a worn bottom ball joint.

Check for a broken spring too.

It could be;

wishbone bush

ARB bush

ARB drop link

Bottom balljoint

Track rod

Track rod end

Broken spring

Worn top mount

Damper

Other

CV Joint ??? Many people think it's a braking fault when a cv joint is knocking as they slow down as they turn.

Quick check for this is put it onto full lock to both sides in a large car park, large area and drive round slowly (not touching the brakes)

Hope this helps

Regards Dave

bushes me thinks

bushes me thinks

A number of the very good points that DOX listed would not just be heard/felt when braking, but when travelling over bumps/dips or uneven road etc. The fact that you only hear it when braking suggests wear on bushes. More likely front ARB bushes or wishbone bushes.

Might be wheel bearing? had mine in the garage having the top mounts changed and when my mate was putting wheel back on driver side he noticed movement. Stripped it back down and a good bit of play in the wheel bearing so new one being fitted in the morning.

gone in today and it appears to be the wheel bearing there was loads of movement in it. quite shocked by the amount of movement really

I was shocked at mine as well. I am used to hearing the classic drone when a wheel bearing is on its way, but not this one. completely silent little bugger. Also seems to have thrown the steering whell out a bit now having had the top mounts and the bearing done, which has caused the ESP to complain about steering angle. Replaced the ARB Bushes this afternoon so just got to get it tracked now. :D
