Mineral oil on Skoda fabia TDi 2008

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can i use mineral oil on my Skoda fabia TDI instead of fully synthetic oil. The reason being service selling it at a very high price and its hard to get the same oil outside. I change oil every one year/ 15000 kms. for mineral oil what is the frequency of oil change and what grade?

No - has to meet 507.00 iirc

As jrw says...definitely do not use it in the PD TDI engine. It will cause massive damage to the camshafts within months. Only use 505.01 or 507 rated oil. It's critical on the PD engines that you use the right oil. If you are in the uk you can buy the oil from any VW or Skoda dealer very cheaply. Look for...Quantum Platinum Gold 5-40w fully synthetic. Over here it costs about £6.80 per litre plus VAT.

As already stated for the PD engine oil MUST be to VW 505.01 spec (not 505.00) or 507.00 due to it getting highly pressurised.

Any oil NOT meeting one of these specs may well not take the pressure resulting in metal to metal contact and a BIG repair bill.

507 is specified for cars with DPF because it has low ash properties. You can use that or the 505 in a non DPF PD engined car. In fact if its cheaper use the 505 if you dont have a DPF......no extra benefit otherwise imho. Most of the newer 505 oils meet 507 anyway, they use it in both petrol and diesel cars at my local Skoda dealer. Castrol edge I believe is what they use in everything.

Still cheaper than a new set of cams for your unit injectors....use what you like provided it meets VW spec as stated in previous posts.

does not need to be expensive, ive just bought 2x 5 liter castrol edge w5x40 from asda on line £70 for 10 litres, enough for 2 services and fully synthetic which is better for the engine emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Just bought 5 litres Quantum 5-40W (conforms to 502.00 and 505.01 which is OK for a PD not on long life service or with a DPF)for £16 from my local VW dealer. Can use it either on the Octavia PD or Fabia TSI.

That is a steal! Don't suppose the vw dealer was near Warrington or St Helens? Was that a special offer or usual price? It sounds a complete bargain.

I'm afraid it was a dealer in Maidstone Kent (Beadles)- they are both a VW and a Skoda dealer (but on different premises). Looking again I quoted the wrong price - I left out the VAT so it was £16+vat = £19. I don't know if it was an offer or not it was just the price I was quoted when I asked about the non-longlife oil they had in stock suitable for a PD. I thought it was good value too, especially as it can be used on the wife's 1.2 TSI, so I got 2 lots of 5 litres whilst I was there!
