Coding issues after new CAN & Columbus

Featured Replies

I've treated my '07 Octavia to a Columbus unit and a new CAN Gateway today (7N0 907 530 C from 1K0 907 530 K), cleared all fault codes and run a new scan. The results are below my questions.

First off, why does the new CAN only have Bytes 0-2 active? Anything from 3 onwards is blank? Have I missed a trick?

Should I have 37 - Navigation and 56 - Radio ticked in the CAN Gateway instalation list? I read somewhere that you needed to have one or the other, but not both! I have 56 - Radio unticked, but it still shows up on the 'Select Control Module' window.

I understand the 008212 - Antenna 2 problem (I don't have two radio antennas as yet), but 00856 - Radio Antenna (according the Ross Tech Wiki) suggests a 'short to ground'!

Would this fit with my hearing a 'clicking' noise from the speakers (sounds like a static click) when VCDS queries 37 – Navigation or 56 – Radio?

I've also noticed that lights on stock CD changer are always on (don’t know if that has changed, but can’t remember seeing that before).

I read on My-GTI.com about changing the wiring on pins 2 & 3 when changing from second generation to third generation head units. When I checked, I did not have anything on pin 2 only a wire on pin 3!

00862 is not on the Wiki so I have no idea why this is being flagged up.

Everything seems to work OK, but if there is an electrical problem I'd obviously like that to be solved along with the issues surronding the new CAN having very little for the long coding helper to go off.

Any suggestions or answer will be greatfully recieved.

Hi

You need to have both 37 navigation and Radio 56 ticked

that will sort out the gateway incorrectly coded

The Columbus faults have nothing to do with the gateway swop

The antenna requirements are different on the sat nav to the standard radio

Check the coding on the columbus

is your GPS signal good?

GPS Signal was pretty good today.

I took a drive with the Columbus showing how many satellites were detected and how many were being used (not the right terminology) and generally it was showing 10 or 12 as being available and between 6 and 10 actually being used, so to speak.

I'll tick 56 as well, clear fault codes and see what happens. I think it was on a VW forum that I read about ticking one or the other, but not both.

Should there be more Bytes 0, 1 & 2 available on the new CAN? It seems a backwards step in that respect as there were 0-7 on the old one. When I select 19 - CAN Gateway, it flags up a warning message in red on Byte 0:

"Only Limited Coding Information is available on this Control Module.

If you happen to need additional Details please contact Support at Ross-Tech.com

Coding is normally done using the Factory and Software-Version-Management (SVM)."

What does this mean?

It might seam backward, On older ones you had 2 options on how to code a gateway, either use the installation list or long coding.

with so many different options on newer cars the bytes would have increased. don't worry about the message, the only things of importance in the long coding are RHD, vehicle type and number of doors.

The faults on the columbus are not that major, providing everything is working

DTC 00856 and DTC 00862 are intermittent, most likely already taken care of and remainders from the installation/retrofit.

DTC 00821 Check the Special Notes about the 2nd Atenna!

DTC 01042 Check the Special Notes about using a proper WSC!

The Gateway Coding itself is correct, the Installation List is not. In fact the Auto-Scan shows just that. ;)

56-Radio -- Status: Not registered 0011

Did you check out our RNS510 Retrofitting Page? :)

Eddie, you are a mine of info.

Just been and had another look and ticked 56 - radio as well... AND, I remembered to clear the DTC's this time (Doh! and apologies for stupidity).

The only ones that have come back are the two that relate to the aerial.

However, the Auto Scan diplay (the one that is active whist scanning) says that the CAN Gateway has no faults, but when the file is saved and then open it shows one fault! (Wish I could put screen dumps into threads so you could see what I mean).

Why the discrepancey?

And why the static clicks via the speakers when scanning the stereo?

Just looked up DTC 01044 of Ross Tech Wiki and a thought came to mind.

When I was ticking boxes in the Installation List on the CAN Gateway, there was no contoller 00-Steering angle sensor, but the sensor had moved to 04-Steering angle sensor (so I ticked that one).

Was that a mistake on my part as well?

Edited by KBPhoto

No, older modules had the sensor listed as 00, newer ones as 04. No problem there, your change was good. If you remain having troubles after the above suggestions please post a fresh Auto-Scan.

just double check the whole of the installation list, when I have done some I have forgot one item or ticked one by mistake

Theresias: Thank you for pointing me back at the relevant articles - I had read them, but had ignored the parts about WCS's. Cleared all fault codes first thing, entered a WSC on 37 - Navigation and everything seems to be fine.

Still have the 00821 fault code on 37 - Navigation and on 56 - Radio which is to be expected considering I only have one aerial.

Eddie-NL: Double checked the list and all was correct. Will either get one of the adapters you pointed me to or fit a second aerial under the front dash using a switched live from the fusebox.

Still not sure about the discrepancy between the scan display and the one that shows when you got o save / print it...

It seems as though VCDS was opening a 'older' version of the log file to show me until I saved them with a different name. Then it brought up one that matched the scan data.

All seems well and good - No battery drain - Understandable fault codes - Columbus working fine.

All I need now is for the seller to send me some maps of Western Europe rather than Eastern Europe and I'll be off...
