Saga of the inoperative Oil Temp. Display

Featured Replies

My car was delivered new with the service schedule set to QG0 fixed service intervals so I was not surprised to find the oil temp. display on Maxidot inoperative-just the three bars. I had read on here that this was always the case with QG0 fixed service intervals.

Later on I found, by reading more threads, that this was not true. The oil temp display can work with QG0 fixed service intervals. It just needs to be set correctly.

Ok, I’ll have it altered at the first service; if it’s there I might as well have it working.

Picked the car up after the service “Can’t alter it as it doesn’t work on QG0 fixed service intervals” was the reply.

I copied some of the threads from here proving they were wrong and tackled the dealer again.

“Bring it in again, it will only take a short while” was the answer after a few days. I assumed they had found out how to do it in the meantime.

Back to the dealer again and after waiting over 3 ½ hours while they worked on it, they gave the car back saying, “we’ve tried everything but can’t find how to change it, we’ll have to contact Skoda UK Technical Dept to find out how to do it”

This is Skoda UK’s reply to them asking if there is any way of coding the oil temperature sensor to read when the vehicle is set to QG0 fixed service intervals: -

I have noticed this before and believe it is due to the fact that no oil temperature calculation is needed for fixed servicing so is ignored by the dash. I’m afraid I am unaware of any way to re-activate the display on fixed servicing. Kind regards. Mike Claridge. Technical support.

This says a lot about Skoda UK Technical Dept. All the people out there who know differently can’t be wrong. I would love to be able to go back to them with step-by-step instructions of how to do it.

Not wishing to mess about any longer, I’ve had the service schedule set to ‘variable’ and the oil temp. display now works perfectly. Waiting to see if the service display sorts itself out after a bit of driving. It’s still displaying the figures from before (8900 miles, 346 days).

It's easy enough to do with VCDS, you can do it with our diagnostic equipment you just need to set it in self diagnosis, adaptation in dash and look to oil TOG and switch it to on.

Just find someone local with VCDS. I am on fixed and have oil temp display.

Does this mean that Skoda's own diagnostic equipment can't do it, as they said?

I'm happy with it now it's on variable service and working.

Yes they can do it with dealer equipment, I have many times.

How come Skoda UK Technical Services have no idea how to do it?

I will pass your info onto the technician who worked on my car, he will pleased to finally know the procedure!

As I said I'm happy to now leave mine on variable servicing with the display working.

It will be interesting to see what mileage I need to do before a service is due.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am 99% sure that your counter won't sort itself out and will be telling you to get it serviced in 8900 miles or 346 days.

When mine was wrongly set to fixed on my last Octavia I took it back in. They set it to variable and the mileage showed 18k straight away and the days 744. (I remember that because I wondered why it wasn't 2x365=730 days - I worked it out that they use 31 day months so 2 years service interval is 2x12x31=744) From then on, after services the miles showed (I think) "-----" for about the 1st 100 miles before it settled on a number around 18k.

For the record - my current Octavia was supplied with fixed servicing and the oil temperature not working. Took it in for a few warranty bits and pieces and they switched it on. The service indicator flashed up the 1st service on time and after service it is still on fixed regime and the oil temperature still works.

Aren't there 3 servicing regimes? Don't know the QG codes but they are fixed without oil monitoring, fixed with oil monitoring and variable. Would they be QG1, QG2 & QG3 or maybe QG0, QG1 & QG2?

Just a final thought! When they say they contacted Skoda UK do you believe them? Or are they so arrogant and kok-sure (why won't it let me write ****?) that it was a "What the f*** do you know about it! Coming in here telling us we can and can't do!" or even "Ooops never thought of asking Skoda UK, better lie cos I know I'm right anyway".

I have a copy of the actual technical query the dealer sent and the reply from Skoda UK. Perhaps there are some dealers you can trust.

I'll continue to monitor the service display and see what happens.

Anyone know how I can code this in VCDS? Just spent an hour trying and cannot work it out.
