Garage security

Featured Replies

Last week the local light fingered miscreants tried to jemmy the door at the side of my garage, after checking the garden shed first!

Fortunately they left empty handed after being disturbed by SWMBO, a challenge no-one would face at 5am!

I'm considering further security for said garage, maybe an alarm or CCTV but just something simple, cheap and reliable.

Anyone with any advice and/or specific recommendations, through their own experience, would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

It depends on the type of door you have fitted to the garage.

But you can always get a Mortice Deadlock or a 5 lever sashlock.

Or you could install a Padbar + High Security lock. Have a look at Squire Padlocks.

My garen shed is at the bottom of the garden ,overloked by a back bedroom . So -I got a low powered light on at night ( to be replaced with a PIR controlled light .In the bedroom window I have a home made DUMMY video camera with a flashing LED -to date has presented more threats when in full street view than the real thing( covertly placed)

.So the idea is to make intruers go elsewhwere--intruders to my rear face the threat of a lit area with a possible vieo recording source ,and then a Terrier who might just have a go - he certainly sounds like it .

Had my shed done a few weeks ago, cop who came suggested one of the really high pitched personal alarms you get... siren inside the door.. cord on a hook..

Thanks for the replies guys, all good ideas. Must admit never thought of the personal attack alarm idea, nice one. They were back again last night so will have to do something quick, alternatively if anyone has a large blunt instrument they don't want let me know!

I have lots of very big blunt crowbars, sledge hammers, and lots of ice axes......and big 3ft long bow saws.....3ft long breaker bars......probably some other stuff...just get a big breaker bar for your sockets from a good tool merchents....the one near me does spanners for nuts 8" to 10" across and these things weight a ton....litraly!!

On OP......pad bolts on the inside of the doors then a seperate pad bolt on the outside of the garage door to bolt it to the frame (reinforce the hole in the frame...I used a round toothed wood joining plate and rebent the teeth all to one side and the hammered and screwed it in place over the hole in the frame) B)

When you're looking at securing a door, always put in hingebolts on the hinge side.

If you're going to go for a door, everyone knows the hinges are weaker than the lock.

Lock side, add a pair of shoot bolts either operated from the central lock or only accessible internally at the top and bottom and this should do the job.

One of these would sort the thieving little scrotes out!

It's just the legality of it's use and the resulting damage to the garage that are the downsides!

Excellent - I'll have two of those please! Sod the damage to the garage, it'd be worth it! Many thanks for the tips.

I bricked up the flimsy rear door on my garage years ago and have a Meta C11 inside. G o o g l e is your friend.

All the above physical deterents are the starting point though.

The Meta C11 garage alarm is ideal for protecting the entire contents of your shed or garage. The C11 is a robust and high quality 118Db alarm, which simply plugs into a 240v socket. (Plug already wired) The sturdy wall bracket secures the unit, and a back up battery ensures the alarm keeps on working in the event that the power supply is interrupted. The alarm is operated by a remote control, and the siren - triggered by a PIR sensor – sounds within the garage, making it almost impossible for a thief to work!
