Aux belt change - guide please?

Featured Replies

Getting a horrible squeek coming from aux belt/area. I've been spraying it with "belt slip" every now and then which stops it for no more than a week!

Since the new belt is only £8 i've decided its worth changing, but dont know about the tensioners, i havnt even checked to see if there is any or where they are located.

After searching the forum i've seen they have them but a special tool is needed to change the belt, could someone please post a guide to changing the belt and a rough price of the tensioners and special tools. Thanks

You don't need any special tools to do the aux belt and tensioner. The squeak may well be the tensioner but it possible that the tensioner is knackered because the pulley on the alternator is on its way out. Replacing the pulley does require a special tool.

Replacing the belt just requires locking off the tensioner and remove and refit the belt. You will need to remove the drivers side front wheel, the plastic undertray and associated plastic bits to get access to the belt. IIRC you can use a 6mm drill bit to lock the tensioner off.

Did my fabia aux belt with just a spanner easy enough.

Signs of wear, renew belt mate.

I can find the belt and price pretty easy! Just cant find anything about tensioner or pullys... Rough price?

Or link to ebay would be perfect!!

Thanks for the replies and tips :)

There is an auxiliary and a cambelt belt (I really don t know) for your model.

Auxiliary belt tensioned I assume, by the alternator, whereas the Cambelt is tensioned by tensioners.

So two different belts, with two operations and different ways to replace.

The auxiliary belt (or alternator belt) is tensioned by a sprung loaded automatic tensioner. Once the belt is off spin the pulley to see if it's noisy or if there is movement in the bearing.

Although on this model as someone has mentioned already it's more than likely the clutched one way pulley on the alternator itself that has seized. A simple check is with the belt on insert a small flat blade screwdriver very carefully into the vent holes in the alternator body, inside there you can see the fan blades. Just see if you can move them one way. They should freewheel in one direction but not the other. If they won't move in either direction it's seized, a new pulley is required (that requires a special tool to change) and cost about £50 iirc.

TPS, Euro Car Parts or GSF will all sell the tensioner, easiest thing is to give whoever is local to you a call. The tensioner should cost less than £30. You should be able to get the alternator pulley cheapest from ECP again about £30 but it is a bit of a pig to do and you need to remove the alternator - get the penetrating oil and brute force and ignorance ready.
