Odd sound from car - metal on metal?

Featured Replies

I went out last night to pick up a take away with my girlfriend. As we were pulling up I heard the most awful sound of metal on metal. It was to the point where I thought the wheel was loose, or something had really given way. I pulled over and checked everything I could with a torch and a good shake to see if anything was loose. Everything seemed fine, nothing was loose or looked damage but whenever I swerved from right to left this noise occurred. It sounds like a loose bracket or something rubbing but i cant find anything wrong.

It is a massive shot in the dark but has anyone ever had anything similar? It is definitely coming from the rear corner of the car, around the exhaust area. - but everything looks 7 feels fine. No difference in driving, cornering or breaking and it only occurs when i swerve (reasonably) from right to left at around 20mph.

Cheers guys :)

If it's from the rear of the car I would be looking at something catching on the wheel.

There are some metal guards that prevent debris from getting on to the rear brake discs, these have been known to work loose and catch.

Also the heat shields are also known to work loose and rattle against the exhaust or underside of the car or even along the road surface.

It if is happening when you swerve then something must be loose and the left to right movement is enough for it to make contact with a moving part, which being the rear of the car pretty much narrows it down to the wheel...

You aaaare not alooone!

Had exactly the problem 3-4 weeks ago. Car sounded more like a tram or steam train at low speeds. Turned out to be a little stone stuck between the braking elements.

Charged 85 EUR to remove. I carry the stone in my walet as a souvenir. Fortunately, no permanent damage, despite ~500 km of driving since the problem occured.

I had the same problem & it turned out to be a stone trapped inbetween the disc & back plate.

I agree, sounds like this, have had similar myself.

I can only assume this was what caused the noise on mine. It started on the way to the airport when I was going off on holiday, of all the times to do it. An awful scraping grinding noise when driving slowly, almost as bad as a broken exhaust scraping on the road. I spent a bit of time in the airport carpark crawling about with a torch trying to see underneath, and running my hands round the backs of the wheels feeling for anything catching on them. Got my clothes quite mucky, spent some of my holiday stressing about it, then low and behold after the holiday on the way home from the airport it mysteriously stopped and has never done it since !

Driving backwards usually fixes this btw.

Yep definitely sounds like a stone to me. Find an empty car park stick it in reverse, reverse quickly and brake and repeat, that should shift it. If not you'll have to take the wheel off and have a look.

Yup had this a few times, little stone between the rear disk and the guard. Sounds like the devil scraping his nails down a blackboard.

A bit of welly in reverse as suggested or get a thin flat screwdriver and have a look for the stone and you can just flick it out. I didn't need to take the wheel off.
