ARBs - 1 or 2; B12 pro-kit or KWs?

Featured Replies

I have read the threads covering suspension issues and have already benefited from kind advice from members. Thank you for this and also in anticipation.

I have a newish Octavia II 1.8TSI 152PS (SE+). Having come from a Yeti, I can't really stand the Octavia's floating feeling (really quite boat-like!) over even moderately uneven B-road surfaces at 60 - 80 mph even in a straight line!

I have decided against an ALK due to what I read about increased noise and steering weight. I have been advised against coilovers due to harshness for daily use.

I need to choose between the Eibach/Bilstein B12 Pro-kit spring/damper combination, and the alternative KW Sports suspension spring/damper kit (not coilover).

I am wary of the B12 due to what I have read of the springs not being firmer than the OE setup, when I need firmness in straight lines not just corners. I am told that the KW kit is as good but firmer.

I like what I've read of the Whiteline Adjustable ARB in the rear .. I read that for VAG FWD cars it's best to upgrade the rear ARB; however, in the light of the fact that my car has no ARBs at all as stock, is it alright to fit the rear ARB without one in the front? Is it perhaps even preferable to fit an ARB just at the rear?

I'm looking for the best result rather than saving cost at this stage.

Many here have the experience I don't have; hence my quest for decision-making help .. so, thank you ..

Koni fsd's and eibach pro springs are my recommendation. Don't the B12s come with matched springs?

+1 for the FSD / Eibachs, couple them with a good rear ARB and WALK kit and you have better comfort and go kart like handling  Oh yeah they do last as well, I have done 25K on this setup pin the last 12 months and its as good as the day they went on!

Thanks for the replies.

Could I have some opinions on the acceptability of fitting just one ARB (rear only)?

I have decided against an ALK due to what I read about increased noise and steering weight. I agree with the added steering weight, but there is absolutely no increased noise or vibration. I have been advised against coilovers due to harshness for daily use. Agreed, on the harshness of coilovers, is something you have to deal with or dont buy them. The koni FSD/Eibach spring combo is very good, and has great ride comfort, but its not even close to the Bilstein B12 kit which is fantastic. Best all round spring/damper combo ive tried and i have a drive in a fair few different options now.

I did however wish for a stiffer rear bar due to trackdays etc, but it really is a good setup for the road. Id say upgrade both bars on yours since you have none at all. the whiteline, KW and H&R kitsd are all equally as good, tbh i dont see much difference between any of them for yourself as all of them will be a HUGE improvment over what you have now

Added my thoughts above in bold.

Going back in time, this is the order i would sort out my chassis mods:

Whiteline front and rear ARBs. -Front set to soft, rear set to stiffest.

Audi TT lower control arms with adjustable camber(Adjust negative camber from 1o to 1.5o)

Bilstein B12 suspension kit

Since you allegedly have no anti roll bars as standard, i wouldnt recommend just ging for a rear bar as that would create a very large differential between front and rear of the car.

If you consider just fitting a rear ARB to the vRS (which already has a front ARB) creates a big differential in the balance and a larger tendancy to oversteer. Now if your car doesnt have the front ARB that difference would be much more pronounced.

Remember on FWD

bigger front bar = more understeer, less oversteer

Bigger Rear bar = less understeer, more oversteer

Both together = much less body roll which improves wheel geometry and therefore grip, but you keep the neutral balance in the oversteer/understeer of the car

janner_Sy, thanks very much for your very helpful response. Looks like I'll settle for the B12 kit plus 2 Whiteline ARBs.

Damian - how much does the B12 kit lower a vRS?

Damian

How much does B12 kit reduce the floating feeling I describe above WITHOUT ARBs?
