Bit of advice please

Featured Replies

Hello all, I am new to this site- and I have been advised to post on this forum. I have a Fabia 1.2 Ambiente (2004) -owned for five months- but today the coolant warning starting beeping then flashing. I have checked the coolant level and it is fine. The beeping has stopped but later the tmeperature gauge went up to half within seconds-although it didnt go any further after that.I have read other peoples messages and it would appear that maybe this is a fault and I will need a new header tank. I just wanted to know is it still safe to drive like this (Ie it wont overheat etc) until I can get to the garage at the weekend? Thanks

:S

As long as your coolant light isn't on, the level is fine, and when running the temp level is ok (and the associated pipes are warm - i.e. the large pipe exiting the head to the radiator is warm) then you should be ok.

If you're very sure you've got no oil in your coolant, then you should be fine.

As for the sensor setting off the alarm - you may be able to clean the system out. In the past i've drained the system out, and used calgon and dishwasher powder and ran the engine up to temp for 10-15 mins, then flushed the system with plenty of water until it runs clear, then filled back up with coolant as normal. The calgon should clear off most of the deposits.

At the worst it's only a couple of quid more than getting another header tank - and at the best, it'll be pretty much spotless :)

Might be better off using Bi Carb of Soda for that instead of the 'C' product. In the 26 years I've been repairing domestic products. I've never seen the 'C' product work! Thay may be different in a different part of the country however? I've only seen the results in the South East.

I've always chucked a bit of calgon in for good measure to be fair - and a bit of dishwasher powder. Every time i've done it, it's come up a treat :D

But bicarb may be just as good :)

Hi, thanks for your reply. I am pretty certain I havent got oil in the coolant, the coolant light hasnt come on again but the temperature gauge is still going up to half within a couple of minutes, however it then doesnt move.I will take it to my garage on Saturday to get him to have look :)
