Timing Belt - Octavia 1998

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me when the timing belt should be changed on my 1.6 LX Octavia. It has currently done 40,000 miles and is 6.5 years old. Does age have any bearing on when it should be chnaged or is it mileage.

It's age and mileage usually.

I suspect that after 6 years it's due , but someone who knows for sure will be along soon.

There is no exact time scale according ot the manual, but my dealer advised it should be inspected at 60,000 miles and replaced if required or 5 years if not done the mileage by then.

At 6.5 years on the original belt i'd get it changed.

I had the timing belt on my Felicia 1.6GLXi changed at 43915 miles and 7 years old on the basis that the belt would deteriorate with age as well as mileage. If you have any concerns - and I guess you have because you have asked the question - then get the belt replaced soon.

I did my 1.6 Felicia cambelt (and water pump) when I bought my car even though the belt had been changed previous to myself owning it. Fact is you never know.

So its done 65,000 miles, on an S plate and on at least its third belt.

Better safe than sorry i say.
