Stealth Boot Build

Featured Replies

Few pics of my boot build, fully intergrated with amp base removable for access to spare wheel. Since these pic the electronic X-over was replaced with passives because the darn thing doenst work, hopefully get it repaired. Ohh and obviously the wiring aswell :)

What we have is 2 x 4ch Vibe space box amps 110w RMS per channel, One amp to power the front 3-way componets running the woofers active and the tweeter/midrange through the provided passives. The other amp will be bridged to power my 6x9's as subwoofers, the actuall speakers are powered by subwoofer drivers should make a good subsitute.

Need to fit alloy bracing under the plastic parcel shelf trim because the speakers are so 'effing heavy, and port my sub boxes too.

Going to finish it when the weather gets better....

Nice job, made something similar myself a while back.

Looks heavy though :wonder:

Have a butchers at my thread it might give you some ideas about covering it

Here's the build thread of mine,

Parcel shelf bulid thread

yeah I agree, looks awesome so far.

was looking at doing this myself for a while but the look of my car needs to be finished before I can start ploughing money into the sounds...but it's on the cards! (and Garry, looks like I might be visiting you for some advice  )

You're welcome to mate

Nice job.

Interesting technique on shelf subs with tiny boxes. Are they effective though? Have you considered sound proofing and sealing the boot, and using that as your sub box?

Those poor parcel shelf strings won't last long. ;):D

I'm still on my original set and my shelf is about 7-8kg :D

That one looks much heavier mind you. :o

Uprated parcel shelf strings must give at least +10hp :D Will be the next big thing, I might start selling them on ebay as everything else there seems to make similar claims :D

Two 8" subs would probably be more effective than the 6x9's.

did the same sort of thing in my micra but had sub boxes hitting on top, so they looked like head rests from distance, work well. Depends what you want, sealed box and you get punch, ported is more boomy but sealed will require a powerful amp to move the cone. There is a calculation to get the box the right size for the power of the speaker, but i dont have the space for massive boxes. So using a whole boot as a box wont really work, sound horrible. Ive done it a safe size but wide as i could go to get some volume inside the box, but what i will do is but some sub woofer stuffing inside it (apparently 'fools' the speaker into thinking the box is bigger) and then put a small port in the side to give a bit a bass reflex. I reckon ported would be better as the front woofers are technically 'sealed'

The car has been fully sound proofed (with cheap stuff, should of splashed out to be fair) and closed cell foam is the barrier between the MDF and sound deadened chassis. Still noisey though :D Going to buy some second skin sludge for under the arches, think that would make more of a difference

haha I can pluck the strings like a instrument  Its the lugs on the tail gate im more worried about. Had to take it out as the plastic trim that holds the shelf stared to bend, ive put a few alloy struts in behind the carpet, hopefully that does the trick

Yep, i weighed my micra one which were a little heavier and it weighed in at a hefty 19kg! :giggle: But i love music so its the price I pay, heavier with awesome sounds no brainier for me

Without a doubt, sub woofer will go much lower than any 6x9's but I had these already, and i know these speakers will provide some quality bass, they are beasts to be fair. Vibe do a sub woofer version of what ive got but for marine applications, same driver, same power output just minus the tweeter in the middle

Hello 'Robbie_95

How thick was the MDF that you used, looks about 18mm approx thick from pictures.

Yep pretty much mainly 18mm, but the sub boxes are 15mm iirc

Nice job! I would make a top frame out of 6mm MDF to go around the shelf's edge so that the shelf will look like the original shelf when it's trimmed. A totally flat shelf will stand out a mile to any thieving scumbags. I would also consider putting some sort of mesh over the speakers to give them some protection.

Good idea might just do that  But must consider weight as its hefty as it is, Dont really hear of people getting their stereo's stolen in my area. Had them in my micra for 2 years and they stuck out so obviously with no trouble. Ive got some mesh stuff for the speakers, stops the cloth from sagging aswell

More of a stealth "it's not really a boot anymore" build... :)

I'd be concerned that the weight of shelf plus speakers is too much for the side shelves/suuports. In order to hold the lot in place as stiffly as possible I think I'd stiffen it them up by filling with MDF/ply and polyU or glassfibre mix. OTOH, I'd board the sides to provide proper support for the shelf and side shelves.

Also think hat without more vents or fan cooling, those amps and EQ are going to get a tad hot.

Like the carftsmanship though. It looks well made. :)

Easy answer is cheap 12v PC fans powered by a relay.

haha theres still a boot, not much of one, enough for me  I need to put some pics up of my bracing, ive stategically placed alloy square tubing under the trim and wedged it on the arches, so that all the wieght is transfered onto the inner shell. Should do the job :)

Ive given thought into boxing the sides, would be good but its more time, more weight, more hassel etc.

Ive been running my amps for a while now and ive done a few hard tests but the amps dont get particuly hot, i have thought of fans but until i get a amp going into protect mode i wont bother. If you look at the pic, in the top left there is a hole, not sure where it goes but get a bit drafty thou. Im going to fit some vents onto the boot base to circulate some air around.
