Si's Project low 'n' slow

Featured Replies

It's swmbo's really!

After ridding the vrs for the Volvo drifter I needed to get our gert a runabout....she always wanted a mk4 3 door but they hold good money so she went for her 2nd choice.....a punto

She liked it but still anchored after a mk4, well a mate of mine wheels n deals a bit and took a mk4 in p/ex for another motor but was struggling to shift it due to high INS costs and it has a few niggles. He offered me a swap for the punto so the deal was done...one happy swmbo (never a bad thing ;) ) and another DUB bk in the family.

Nothing special!.....1.8 20v non turbo 125bhp :giggle:

Tidy for the year!

Anyway onto the niggles (good job I like tinkering!)

The brakes were poor so replaced discs n pads all round and had to change a knackered rear caliper aswell

Was told the bang on bumps was the knackered suspension, so I thought no probs gives me an excuse to fit coilovers

Quick call to Damian @ dpm performance and some jom's were ordered and fitted.

Meanwhile a mate of mine who dismantles cars tells me he's got some 18's at a price I couldn't miss. Only old style RS4's but they'll do.

They will be re-furbed in a similar colour to this..

Knock still there  whilst changing the suspension we found the bushes are naff! So I'll be poly bushings it after Christmas.

They don't look to bad, some small tyres and a bit of stretch will be needed :giggle:

After fitting the coilovers (which are wound down) "if it ain't rubbin it ain't dubbin"

I found That the front arb catches the drivers side drive shaft so some adjustable droplinks were ordered as there meant to cure the catching issue. Also i got back the powerflex dogbone mount off my old vrs which is this weekends task. Also ordered a new thermostat and coolant temp sensor which will hopefully arrive in time to fit at the same time as everything else.

It's not bad apart from That arb/shaft rubbing which'll hopefully be sorted this weekend.

It's not that low, and it's not a GTI either ;)

Care to elaborate??

It's a 1.8 20v non turbo 125bhp gti both log book and INS state this so what makes you think it's not??

The coils are wound all the way down and it's settled even more since those pics.

The rear adjusters and the front helper springs could come out and maybe a chassis notch but then it'd be undriveable and seen as our lass and kids are in it most of the time then I don't see the need.

Plus it catches on both the drive and speed humps now if your not careful.

On a plus note got the powerflex dogbone mount and the adjustable droplinks on today and there's no more contact between the arb and driveshaft so that's a result!

Just my slight annoyance with the UK VW marketing department! :D

Mk4 Golf GTI = 1.8 20v Turbo (150bhp, or 180bhp in Anniversary spec)

The 1.8 20v non-turbo and the 2.0 8v were both badged as a GTI in the UK only, so aren't real GTIs! Most of the 2.0's are actually Highline spec if you check the boot sticker. Turbo's say "GTI" on the boot sticker.

It's part of the reason that the MK4 was panned as a performance car in the UK.

The RS4's are classic though, and it should look nice on them :D

Aha I see, it is a bit limp wristed to be classed a gti and it's definitely not for me but our lass likes it so if it keeps her happy and off my back then that's a bonus :giggle:

The RS4's wouldn't have been my first choice tbh but couldn't say no at the price he offered so they'll do and once painted should be different.

I don't want to spend a fortune and won't be going mad with it, just hopefully get it looking nice with a few touches here and there.

To do includes

Poly bushes, wishbones, front arb (which I may change to a vrs,4mo,tt etc as they go under the shaft not over), rear axle.

Paint rims and fit tyres

Tints

Front strut braces upper/lower

Rear brace

Rear arb if one pops up cheap enough.

Stainless exhaust with discreet tailpipe.

Service and let her enjoy while I look for another drifter

They're a step up from the 2.0 8v - god they're slow!

The RS4's are a classic wheel on the Mk4, I think that pink and black will be good too :)

Not a lot doing with this as

1) it's our lass's

2) I've got my drifter to concentrate on.

But I have fitted some wheels this week for her :)

She wants them painting purple but that can wait a few weeks.

Regret not taking them Houstons now!

I like the Mk4's had one before my Fab

3 doors look best on the Golfs IMO

Never mind dude, I'm sure some other rims will come up. I just needed them gone sharpish :)

It's not a bad car tbh and she likes it, not quick enough for me tho lol.

Unfortunately our lass has killed this so it's been sold!
