Cv joint

Featured Replies

The curse of needing to use my car has struck and the outer cv joint on the ns has collapsed so the car won't drive etc. had a look about passat forums and they describe removing the half shaft, is this the way to go? Also has anyone got any tips on the best kit to use. Saw gsf on other post but can't find the described kit on their online shop, anyone know the part number etc?

Think I will fix it mot and sell it!

Cheers

Tom

Hi Tom,

Just so happens I'm about to have the o/s CV joint done on wednesday.. I'll use my local guy to do this so I cant help with the details too much. I can tell you that the outer joint is about 70 euro here in Ireland and about an hour's labour give or take. Shouldn't be too painful all told. I reckon a decent pattern part would do the job, not much point in going mad on money as it will go again. As for selling the car, I'd keep it if I were you. They're not worth much second hand and all in all a pretty good motor.

Best of luck,

Rob

Cheers for the advice, hours labour doesn't sound bad, be about five hours of my DIY attempts. Will have a think about selling, its a lovely car but worry about becoming a money pit, would miss the heated leather though

I had to get a new driveshaft for my octy and got it from these guysMy link It came the next day and seems really well made, plus it comes with a 2 year warrenty. Dunno if it's the right joint for your superb

Word of warning on GSF sourced joints: I have replaced CV boot on my Octavia's CV joint that has been bought from GSF some 3 years ago. The joint was nearly impossible to dismantle as the ball cage "catches" the balls. I spent 30mmin on all other aspects of the job, and over 1 hour on trying to put the balls back into the joint after cleaning it.

By coincidence, I replaced CV boots on 3 other (original, not GSF) CV joints this year (1x 9 yr old boot/9yr old joint on the Octavia, and 2x 3yr old boot/5yr old CV joint on the Superb), and I was able to dismantle and put together each of these joints into separate parts in under 1 minute.

So, while the GSF supplied joint still appears to work fine, by my standards it is completely unmaintainable. You have been warned.

Bit of an update, got one from my local parts shop for £31. Would get £6 back on surcharge but it has to be reconditionable, mine was in two bits so no chance of that. Very easy DIY job as long as you buy the 17mm hex socket for the hub nut and find a 10mm 12 splined socket.

This guide helped a lot

Still thinking about selling up though, but we'll see!
