Clutch quotes?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My clutch has started slipping last night and its been getting worse today. Decided to have a ring around and get some quotes. Anyway the clutch kits fitted range from £495 to £750.

One garage said. Replace your dual mass fly wheel as well. I dont understand why I should replace it at a cost of £250. The pressure plate forces the fiction disc onto the surafce of the flywheel. Surely if the firtction discs have worn down and damaged the surface of the DMF then I re use and get it machined. I can get it done in work.

Can you guys fill me in on some facts why I would replace the DMF during clutch replacment. Or am I being mugged right off?

Cheers,

Gaz

Depending on milage and how much abuse it's had, the springs that hold the two parts of a dual-mass flywheel might be starting to lose their "springiness" and not holding it as rigidly as they should do. It might be that your particularly DMF is fine, however if you change it now then it's done and you won't be paying for another load of labour charges and ideally another friction plate in future. It's pretty much the same amount of work to change the clutch and flywheel as it is just for the clutch (and it's quite a lot of work) so some places will want to do it all at the same time to try and save you money in the long run. Otherwise it could fail, damage your clutch, and you're £750+ out of pocket.

is a very bad example, if it gets anywhere near that bad then you'll probably get various knocking noises as the two masses bang around with no springs to keep them in check.

I see what what mean. Two fly wheels mounted togeather with a series of springs for dampening. I see. Yeah I want that changed. Cheers buddy.

and then the gearbox has to come off again to replace the DMF.... Why not fit a single mass flywheel kit whilst there? If remapped, its only a matter of time before the new clutch starts slipping again and if refitting the used DMF, how long that will withstand the extra torque too.... There is a Southbend "silent" singlemass clutch kit that Darkside Developments are doing which could be suitable for you.

Are the dark side kits any good?

Right booked in tomorrow for clutch, pressure plate, thrust bearing/cylinder and be DMF replaced. £750 inc parts and labour.

Sound about right?

Depends on which clutch you've went for...

Darkside quoted me £582 fitted for replacement sachs DMF, clutch, pressure plate and bearing.

Clutch & flywheel £400ish so £350 to fit it?! Where abouts are you? Unit 18 charge less than half that to fit it!!

That sounds way over priced. my garage is £150 labour to change clutch on a fabia. they charge me cash in hand though.

I'm in Bristol. I bookedit into my local vw specialist.

Main dealer quoted £495 inc bat but that's not with DMF. It will be a genuine clutch and DMF. So what ever was fitted as standard Is going back in. It's done 101k and my cars 8 years old so can't really complain.

He said its the DMF that's the expensive bumps the price up.

Spoke to my mate (who was a VAG tech for 4 years) and the VAG agent will more than likely fit a LUK or Sachs kit anyway, these are about £380+VAT from GSF so best part of £350 labour for a 2 hour job on the ramps is seeing you off for about £150.

Carl.

Cheers mate. I'm no puss bag when it comes to this stuff. So if this guy which is almost a mate of mine mugs me off. I will raise the question at pay point and say something. If he does rip me off there will be murders.

Cheers
