fitting a new rear bumper

Featured Replies

I'm hoping to fit a replacement rear bumper on sunday on my drive.

are they are clips/ties that commonly break or anything adhesives that i should have to hand or is it a simple swap job.

If anyone has anyone experience of changing rear bumpers it would be greatly appreciated

shame no one has offered any help yet?

Sorry Mr Sonner, I've only ever done a front bumper :(

Can't imagine you'd need adhesives though.

For a stock non vRS bumper you don't need anything more than the screws and clips that will already be in place....

It only gets complicated (trimming and gluing) when you want to fit the bottom lip part (as fitted to the vRS) to a standard bumper.

I had the rear bumper off my Elegance to fit parking bleepers... Went back on with no new clips required... You DO have to strip a few parts out of the boot though to get to all the screws... Well, that depends actually... It is possible to get the back lights off (screws underneath them) with out any stripping but it's a pain.

Am hoping to fit my parking sensors over Christmas, so any hints welcome!

thank you for the replies everyone.

I removed and refitted my '54 VRS rear bumper a couple of months ago. It's pretty straight forward. Remove the rear light clusters (4 nuts for each one) - I also removed some of the plastic boot trim too. Remove the 2 or 3 rear wheel arch screws, the unscrew the 5 or 6 screws along the bottom of the bumper. Be careful that you don't drop the bumper or have it swing round and scratch your arches when you're pulling it off. I'd advise having a mate help if possible. I did it by myself and found it easier to slowly swing it down to the ground, whilst gently unclipping the extreme edges of the bumper from the clips hidden at the back or the rear quarters.

Refitting is pretty much the same as removal, however, take a lot of care to clip the plastic clips of the bumper to the wing. I missed a couple and had to keep re-doing it! Mine has bedded itself back in again and looks as good as new, even though I did a DIY paint job on it to last the winter.

Sorry to waffle on. Hope this helps.
