WIND EFFECT!...

Featured Replies

Yesterday I had to make a trip on the lovely A12 from Witham to Ipswich and back. This turned out to be quite interesting as the weather made sure there was a considerable wind blowing in my direction going to Ipswich. I hadn't fully realised just how strong the wind was until I pointed the Fabia in that general direction and squirted the car to 70mph. Within moment the car was running away to 75-80mph without me doing anything much so I eased off the throttle yet the speed was maintaining at 75 indicated as if by magic. My foot was only just brushing the throttle at this point but much speed was still showing on the clock. Lovely! Lovely because within just a few miles the trip computer was saying we were covering the miles at 76mpg!! Yes, that's right, 76mpg. That's a bit more than I would normally get at 75mph (normally around 63-65mpg at that speed). On the way back however, it was a much different story. The traffic was going slower on the return trip probably due to the huge headwind we were all encountering. By the time I had arrive back in Witham the trip computer said just 52.3mpg and my cruising speed was around 65mph due to the traffic being bunched up and going slower (sensibly too). Just goes to show how much the wind can affect the old fuel consumption eh!

I'm definitely going to try 'tacking' into the wind next time I'm on the A12 to see what difference it makes. I just hope I can remember to...'manoeuvre', 'signal' and 'look' (I think that's my usual order I do it in, must be right as I miss most of the accidents I see in my rear view mirror !!!) before I change tack!!

Anyone else have wind trouble yesterday? :D

I was affected by wind, Indian for Tea..emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Mine was caught out by a gap in the trees = big sidewind when I was gunning it up the bypass! Slowed down after that lol

Last week , in only moderate winds,The Yeti showed 35ish mpg into wind on the M62 and 52 mpg returning home with a bit less tail wind.( I love beans on toast as well.....)

The fabia is a bit barn doorish so will get caught by wind, on the upside great head clearance, seems like all new small cars have this shape, maybe it's because old fogeys tend to buy them !

Who you calling an old foggie!!! :D Just cos I'm having a bit of trouble with the wind! :p

Thinking about myself ;) I used to do a lot of weightlifting many moons ago, squats n stuff no my necks a bit temprimental so the high entry helps, we use an Astra in work I keep bashing the door on the way in, then I will be in pain all day , then it's on with the voltarol for days after, the fabia is perfect, but when it's windy god is it a handful wants to jump to the other side to give the cars on the other side a kiss ;)
