suspension overhaul time

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

ok so im getting the feeling the taxi is in need of a full suspension overhaul as its coming upto 90000 miles soon and its starting to feel very boat like.

it almost feels like the car wants to sit on its doors when going around corners.

now as i have 19" wheels fitted im thinking of lowering the car a little, say 30mm.!

im not stuck to this brand but im thinking about going for a full setup of the bilstein B6 http://84.18.196.230/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=555744774

or the B8(Shortened) http://84.18.196.230/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=555743154 shock absorbers.

what would you folks recommend i go for? would i really need the shortened versions of the shocks?

others that im looking into are the following -

also im wanting to totally renew all track rods, ball joints and the rest of the superb's crazy suspension arms set up. now im not wanting to end up with these cheap Chinese brand parts so im wondering if someone can possibly knock me up a list of the parts i need to replace as i unsure of all the joints and arms etc on the car. also what after market brand should i be looking into. must be the best quality.

my taxi has served me very well and id like to maintain it to the highest possible standard i can.

advice please, thanks.

anyone?

also ive found this set on ebay, ive emailed the seller to ask what brand the parts are as i dont want to end up with chinese/indian parts. http://www.ebay.co.u...9#ht_1533wt_952

the seller has told me that the suspension parts are manufactured by DELPHI.

are delphi a reputable manufacturer?

I think Delphi are an OEM manufacturer for many vehicle parts - I recall my Peugeot had a few Delphi bits from new on it. So if they are Delphi I guess the quality would probably be pretty good.

Do you really need a full suspension overhaul at just 90000 miles? Mine feels very good at 100000!

Likewise.. i just had my first overhaul. Mile counter is at: 206250 miles.

Hi folks,

While B5 suspension is (too) complicated, it is also quite durable. 90k miles is nothing for this suspension, what you likely need are new shock absorbers only, and possibly track rods (taxi, town driving).

I replaced shocks on my Superb after just 15k miles as the car started rolling on the roundabouts (incidentally, it also took only 15k to notice this on the Octavia). Since then, I have been one very happy owner of Bilstein Sports B6 monotubes all round, and the ride has been and is fantastic, 85k miles and counting. Same comfort as stock shocks and very little roll in corners.

The only other thing I replaced on suspension was front springs (replaced front HD suspension springs with stiffest factory sport ones as I like the front almost flat in corners).

The setup that works for me (on a 2.5TDI V6 heavy-nosed barge) is as follows: Bilstein Sport B6 shocks all round (look at katalog.bilstein.de for part numbers), HD (raised) suspension springs at rear that I got with the car (part of rough road package), and hardest factory sport suspension springs on the front. This lowers front about 15mm, and raises rear about 15mm compared to stock values. Raised rear makes for better rear grip at speed, plus when the car is fully loaded and a ~70kg towbar carrier is attached, the car is still level enough and handles well at high speeds (120mph+).

If you have 90k mile taxi with stock springs, you will likely find that just upgrading shock absorbers fixes most of the handling, though it is worth checking all balljoints for play while the shocks are replaced, esp steeering rods. If you get to change the springs too, Superbs and Octavias do very well with stiff front and soft rear, as most of the weight is in the nose of the car.

I'm using the same Bilstein as dieselV6 with H&R springs. Works absolutely perfect, never had such a smooth ride.

to be honest, it probably only needs a new set of springs and shocks, and i think im going to go for this setup- http://84.18.196.230/pages/products/product_info.mhtml?product=3872573 as i hear KW produce pretty good quality parts.! opinions?

im starting to hear a slight rattling sound coming from the front when the car is idling and driving. also i can hear this rattle with the car parked up when i kick the wheel.! sounds like some ones tapping a metal tin, almost like something behind it is worked loose or worn out. hopefully it will just be the track rod ends.

Have you had the front pads replaced recently? I had this kind of rattling when I put new pads on - they are handed, and can actually fit easily left to right and vice versa. It still brakes all right, but rattles too.

The rattle wil probably just be the pads lacking the little fixing clips that sometimes come with them. I had it on the Octavia and it doesn't effect the braking, it's just annoying every now and then. I really had to be listening for it though

the rattling turned out to be the engine shield under the car, the screws worked themselves loose. rattling all sorted now.

but the car feels very crashy and bouncy so i thinks its definitely suspension overhaul time.

also, what parts can i renew while the suspension is off the car? ie top mounts, bearings, bushes etc?

thanks.

KW suspension kit fitted all round.... verdict.......= Awesome!

i can now actually go around corners without the feeling of the car wanting to fall straight on its side. the KW kit isnt a harsh ride at all. and for a taxi this does me just fine. KW suspension = a heads up from me!

Again for future reference, where did you buy the kit? :-)

hi i was just reading this and thinking of my one rattling the same way

what have you done so far to get rid off the rattle

Just remember lads if you are changing the track rod ends as supplied in the kit above you must reset the raised toe anong with the regular toe on the Superb so check that you can get somone with the equipment to do this if you dont reset the raised toe you will end up with the car feeling very boaty and wearing tyres uneavenly
