Maybe newbie brake question...sorry

Featured Replies

right then, got some new pads for the rear of my 1.4 16v estate, went to fit em yesterday to find the discs are in a shocking state, off to get some new discs today, now fitting em aint a problem, the question is will I need to do anything with the handbrake adjustment once the new discs and pads are on? Im more of a bike man so have only ever changed motorbike discs and front discs/pads on cars, any help appreciated, can see how to adjust the handbrake so doing its not a prob, just need to know if I do

see if it functions ok after?

just pump the pedal out hard when you are done and will be fine

If its anything like the Polo you'll need a caliber rewind tool to get the piston in enough to clear the new pads.

This is the correct answer!

The pistons needs "re-zero'd" when you fit new pads - though if the rear discs are "shocking" on the outside they will probably be totally "most shocking" on the inside, so maybe change them as well.

Prize to the person who said youll need the rewind tool..........feck me, gave up trying to get the piston back in yesterday even with the tool, need an extra pair of hands so attack number two on saturday. anyone know a trick to holding the caliper while trying to windthe piston back in  ....bikes are so much easier lol. yep the discs are shocking,no way would they have passed the next MOT, may well be the originals though which aint bad at all with 114k on her now

Right then, what am I missing :( Cannot get the piston's all the way back in, in fact I only need them to go another 2-3mm to allow the new pads in :p . Will I be right in thinking that there is some corrosion on the brake piston's which is stopping them going further into the caliper's so its gonna need a strip and clean :'(

Anyone got a haynes manual they wanna part with :smirk:

They can be a right 'mare.

Your best bet is to get leverage on them. I found some hollow metal tubing to extend the arms of the rewind tool and twisted you all it's worth, youll get there in the end!

tried the tubing trick, in fact it started to bend the guide plate for the rewind tool :'(
