Looking For My First Skoda!

Featured Replies

I'm currently looking for a new car and the Octavia VRS seems to tick all the boxes.

It's big enough for all my mountain bike crap in the boot, sporty enough to be fun to drive, pretty well specced and looks quite smart as well!

I'm going to take a look at this one tomorrow and was wondering if anyone's got any pointers over and about the stuff int he buyers guide thread that I should look out for?

It's 140,000 miles, FSH, 2 owners, taxed and MOT'd.

Are the 1.8T motors pretty reliable if looked after? Are they good for this kind of mileage?

If you have read the buyers guide and happy that you have most points covered and the potential car ticks these box's then the only thing to do is when you drive use you own judgment that you are happy with the car, as in the end it is you that need to feel comfortable with what you are buying.

These cars are over 10 years old now so they do need good servicing. They are still a very good value for money and well built, with strong engine, and the fact that the VRS shares the same floor pan, mechanics and parts as the VW Golf, Seat Leon Audi TT, you have a wide choice of service and part available.

I know three Octy VRS's locally that have done 140k+ miles and are still going strong. I sold mine in the spring with just over 140k on the clock and it still drove and looked like the 80k car it was when I bought it.

The one in the ad should have had it's 2nd cambelt and waterpump done within the last year or two so you might want to check that has been done.

Also worth checking if major things like the suspension and clutch have been replaced already or not as they can be well and truly sh**ged at 140k miles and the 6 month warranty will probably not cover them as they're considered "wear and tear" items, it will however help out if you get any electrical gremlins.

The boots are massive as you probably already know, you may need to remove the bracing bars behind the rear seats to fit a bike in with the seats down though

Cheers guys.

I'm expecting to be needing a cambelt and water pump so I've budgeted for that. Any other bits and bobs I'm happy to do as I'm a mechanic by trade so I'm prett happy to potter about with the car.

Good stuff - if you've not already got an account with TPS then sign up, parts will be a lot cheaper for you at trade prices.

Thanks, that's good to know!

+1 for that

My account is MBAutos and i am not a trade mechanic.

Mind you they have probably had more money from me than most mechanics the amount of servicing and stuff I do on my car and other local octy owners.
