Clutch

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just after abit of info regarding clutches!

Well my dmf clutch is on the way out as it doesn't like the extra power of the new mods, so I have a couple options on the new clutch obviously going smf clutch but which one?

Do i go with the g60/vr6 option which I think I'm favouring at the moment but have heard of a few people getting bad judder which I don't really want because "her indoors is already complaining about the work that has been done lately" Also do I go with Sachs or luk? Any opinions?

Or eurocarparts do a all in kit, has anyone fitted this or know if they are good or bad.

Any thoughts or criticism greatly welcomed! :D

I've got the G60/VR6 clutch and flywheel in mine and you do get a little bit of judder but not too bad. I've just fitted an uprated dogbone mount bush to mine aswell which I think is amplifying it a little at the moment, i've been reading that its likely to bed in over next few thousand miles. Its still very driveable and i'd recommend it to any one. I also have a spare Valeo VR6 clutch kit which came with the car if you do go down that route. :)

What exactly do you mean "judder"

I have nothing on my set up other than a little if I ride the clutch on a hill etc

Nothing whilst idling or anything though.

As Porkballs mentioned, there is a small amount of judder when pulling away if you dont fully let the clutch out(or ride the clutch). You can drive through that though. After I had mine fitted I started a topic about it on here as I wasnt 100% happy with it. I changed my driving style and now Im used to it. If you try to slip it like you can on the original DMF equipped car then it wont like it. However, you can pull away much quicker and the pedal is really light and responsive. Also the car revs a little better as the SMF is lighter.

Thats the one I get, just checking lol, the dmf does allow you to be lazy imo, you just need to drive properly now lol

There is another rattle if you use the six speed box, just making sure we weren't talking about that

:) There is a barely noticeable noise with the clutch out at idle but its extremely faint. I went for Sachs clutch on mine as we sell Sachs at work and there stuff is top notch quality. I personally wouldnt go for a Eurocarparts kit unless I knew what makes were in the box.

Thanks for the replys!

So it looks like the "judder" has been slightly miss read and is nothing to worry about. The car is fully poly bushed and wound down on coil overs so theres plenty vibration anyway :D

The eurocarparts kit is a valeo but think I will go with Sachs or luk unless I need something slightly more uprated as the car will be going revo stage 2 once the clutch is sorted!

No judder on mine. Just let it bed in properly, and get used to driving with a real flywheel again! You can pull away much quicker with the SMF setup, and gear changes are much sweeter.

The DMF and clutch kit fitted to your car from the factory is made by LUK. LUK seem to be the OEM for VAG Europe, and Sachs seem to be the OEM for VAG North America. That's why lots of the US sites (like ECS) quote Sachs, but in the UK you will get a LUK clutch kit from Skoda or GSF.

Some people bum Sachs for unknown reasons, but others (me included) think LUK is the better brand. At the end of the day the part numbers are identical, and the clutches are exactly the same, so it doesn't even matter!

I'd avoid the Valeo 3-piece kit that ECP do. Just get the G60/VR6 kit as you'll always be able to easily get a new clutch kit for it. It opens up more options basically....

Thats the one I got, on recco of my fitter, who reckoned he had more trouble with LUK than Valeo in the past, Valeo is OEM for BMW so can't that bad .......Surely !! I hope ...

I'm sure it'll be fine Dave. I put a Valeo clutch in my Suzuki, and me and my dad fitted one to his Nissan a few months back. Both have been fine since.

I was thinking more about interchangeability of parts really. Once you have the G60 flywheel, you can take your pick of the many VR6 clutch options out there, and you know they'll always fit. Just opens doors for the future. Having said that, I expect my current clutch to outlast the car now....

Well it looks like my mind is made up, g60/vr6 clutch setup will be sorted out tomorrow! Fingers crossed the missus wont notice much difference but I will :D

Can't wait to get it all fitted and be able to take the revs above 3k without clutch slip, oh the joys of extra torques from the turbo back exhaust :D

Thanks for all the input, you guys never disappoint!!!

Yep I got the VAG flywheel from TPS, they had no dates on the clutch kit coming in though but I got a good price on the Valeo via the guy in TPS
