DRL's whats the deal?

Featured Replies

Hi i've just ordered some LED DRL's for my car but having looked into how to fit them there seems to be alot of talk about fitting a live switch /relay etc,

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/220421-switched-live-help/page__p__2594936__hl__drl%26%2339%3Bs__fromsearch__1#entry2594936

is this a legality? I thought the whole point of DRL's is that they are on constant when the car is running so as to aid visibility of you to others, so why would you need a switch to turn them off? I take it the octy II with them as standard doesn't have a switch.

Would there be a problem just wiring them into the side light wiring?

No there isn't a switch to turn them off when they come as standard BUT......

When they are fitted as standard they dim when you turn your headlights on.

DRLs by definition need to be extra bright to be seen during daylight hours. If they stayed this bright when it was dark (i.e when you need to switch your headlights on) they will dazzle other drivers.

So the problem with just wiring them to the sidelights would be that they will not automatically dim when the headlights come on.

I'm not sure if the live switch/relay gets round this problem but it is definitely something which needs to be addressed.

Aftermarket DRLs simply wire to the side lights to remain strictly legal. As mentioned above, when the sidelights are operated they will switch to a lower voltage.

This kit from philips is awesome. Luxeon LEDs, switcher and everything needed. They are absolutely the equal to anything fitted in the factory.

Placement is important though. Legally speaking, over 250mm from the ground and 550mm apart emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Mine are wired to the switched live so are always on. What would be needed to make them dim when the headlights are on?

I have this one, paid about 50p.Are wired on the ignition, and have a module wich turn them OFF when low beam is on

Cool, thanks. Will grab one of those as I got stopped by the police in Auckland and was offered the choice of disabling the DRLs or a $150 fine.

On the Fabia II/Roomster there is an on/off switch for the DRL's behind the fuse box cover. Maybe there is a way to do this in the Octavia?

How does the lower grill pieces come out? As this would make fitting to car easier. Do they pop out or is there bolts/screws

They just clip in - iirc the clips are at the top and bottom. You can just give them a tug, or if you can insert something thin along the top/bottom you can flex them out a little more gently. Don't damage the paintwork though!
