Warning! long post about soggy carpet

Featured Replies

Hi,

Have spent the last week trying to find out where water is getting into the passenger front footwell but am getting nowhere. Have had the plenum trim off twice and checked the drain holes are clear, the only ones i could find are in both corners of the plenum chamber and vent straight into the wheelarches, had the wheelarch liner off but as there is no drain tube or channel and the holes in the plenum chamber are about 20mm in diameter they couldnt get blocked anyway. am fairly sure it isnt door seal related as there is never any water along the bottom of the door or on top of the plastic sill trim. Have taken the pollen filter out and cleaned it, no sign of water in the filter or the housing but the the bulkhead under the sound deadening to the left of the pollen filter is definitly wet. Dont think its washer pipe or aircon drain either as the carpet had started to dry out over the last couple of days until last night when the carpet was again soaking wet after an hour of rain. Have owned the car from new and has had no accident damage or the windscreen replaced and has only been leaking for the last couple of weeks. Would rather try and find a cure myself as i dont really want the facia and trim taken out at the dealers {its still under warranty} but am reaching the point of giving in. If anybody has any ideas i would be very gratefull!

Thank you.

The dealers will proberbley take all the trim out,the seat and roll back the carpet in that area.Leave a hose pipe on the car for a few

hours and have a look around with a torch. Is this something you cold do at home? The problem you face is if you find the leak and its a seam or the screen it could be hard to seal in a DIY situation, not trying to be negative but from experiance water ingres can be a pain to cure.If its under waranty I would take it back and get the fault logged in case faults re-appear.

The exact thing happened in my 08 Passat. I hunted for months and eventually found it to be the bond on the windscreen breaking down. Got a new screen fitted, problem solved.

I have heard of this several times before on a few forums. Happened on a family members Passat Estate.

If u look under the door bottoms there are some drainage holes that get blocked. Just use a tooth pick to clean them. When water builds up in comes in through the bottom of the doorcards. Let me know how u get on.

I had problems with water in the passenger foot well. It was eventually traced by the local Skoda garage using the hosepipe method to the bulkhead. It turns out that there is a hole where the steering column would go through if the the car was a left had drive model. There was a small hole / crack in the seal / weld on the cover over this hole.

Thanks for the suggestions, The reason i dont want to have my car gutted at the dealers is that i doubt very much if it will be quite the same again regarding squeeks and rattles if the dash comes out [its been squeek free so far]> This will certainly be a last resort.

Did have a look under the door today, am i right in thinking there is one drain hole towards the front? Will have a look tomorrow for the steering column blanking plate.
