Fans come on when cold !

Featured Replies

Just finished fitting my replacement turbo, plumbed in oiled up and watered.

Struck the car up, and left running on tickover, checked the coolant levels and topped up as necessary.

Noticed the 2 rad cooling fans were running!

Noticed that the temp warning light on the dash was flashing, temp at only 20-30 degrees.

Switch off the engine, pipes to the bottom of rad was cold, top hose, warm.

Struck the car up again, dashborad temp light no longer on, rad fans still running!!!!

Any ideas anyone, is this normal?

Sounds like coolant temp sensor issues to me..

Although if your climate control is set at 'AUTO' the fans will kick in and run.

My fans are the other way round, they don't run.. so when i'm stuck in traffic I just hit auto and the fans run lol

Maybe you have an airlock/thermosat issue too? Cold coolant hose doesn't sound like the coolant is circulating properly, what temperature does the car run at? Bang on 90 in the middle?

I'll check the climate control tomorrow, didn't know the fans came on if the 'auto' is on.

New to the skoda Octavia VRS haven't had it on the road yet.

Forgot to mention that when i left the car running for the second time the temp crept up to 90 and stayed there, so you could be right.

The car should sit bolt upright at 90, that is normal.. Have you drove the car yet? Coolant temp sensor has been known to cause all sorts of weird and wonderful issues.. there are 2 outputs I believe one to the ECU to adjust fuelling/messages to the clocks and the other to run the cooling fans etc.

All I will say is replace with OE quality part

Think this one is the same as mine, have a check and message them first. cheers

Havn't had the car on the road yet as i bought with a turbo problem and the MOT has run out.

Where abouts is the sensor? I wonder if Ive disturbed a connection when replacing the Turbo.

Many thanks

Temp sensor is located at the engine end of the top rad hose.

If the gauge is reading 90, & the top rad hose is hot, but the bottom hose is cold you have an airlock.

Best way to get the airlock out is remove the header tank cap turn the heater up to full, & hold the revs up at 2500 to 3000rpm for at least 5 mins after the temp has got up to 90. Someone squeezing the top & bottom hoses helps too.

If you can't get the bottom hose hot the thermostat is stuck closed.

Thanks for that, looks like I've got a few things to check out tomorrow.
