Bonnet gas struts?

Featured Replies

Hey, does anyone know if you can buy gas struts for the bonnet? or if they would retro fit off another car?

i never realised how heavy it was until i just put my dodgy back out lol

You used to be able to buy them on ebay.

I had Foliatec/Autostyle ones on mine but replaced the bonnet at one point and took them off as they were starting to look a bit rusty.

They do need a bit of modifying to fit though, you either need to bend the ball shaped end bit in a vice to the right angle or need to fit the top bolt into the bonnet hinge at a funny angle. They make lifting the bonnet so much easier!

You can fit the Fabia tailgate lifter instead (just on one side) and that works just as well

will a fabia one need bending too?

doh wish id read that first. just bought a pair of mk3 golf ones off ebay to do the bending method. might still drill and tap where it says on the thread and see about less bend instead.

I drilled and tapped mine at an angle and didn't have to bend the end of the strut. Be careful you don't drill too deep though as it can go through the bonnet - and protect any drill holes from rust with some grey primer.

I have golf mk4s on mine. We tapped it slightly with a hammer and they popped in place.

I got mine from eBay.

If only the fabia mk1 was as easy to fit them :D

andy86, lifters on order.

good thread - just ordered teh fabia stuff and some ball joint nuts. Hopefuly do it this weekend :) Does anyone know if the ball joint things will screw into metal or whether they need a nut on the back side?

Venom lifters arrived, anyone speak German? Instructions are not in English. Lucky they are basically bolt on

any chance of a pic of the mounts and where they go? specifically the bonnet one.

umm ............ i got my from a brisky  i feel bad cos cant remember who

they went on perfect  and cost a mere £20

Struts on. Took a different stance to others and filed the ball cap to allow for the angle created by the bonnet fixing. Quite a happy bunny for two hours work.

yesiamtom, the bonnet mount point is furthest forward hinge bolt. Kit comes with a ball ended bolt.

Any pics of it fitted?

So the JOM kit turned up today (I wanted it for the ball joints) and i think they've sent me the wrong one. The bonnet mount is the wrong size bolt as it looks like a M8 coarse thread. Kind of sucks because i was hoping to fit it tonight :( Wondering if the coarse thread will self-tap into the metal between the two bonnet mounts but i need to pikey a drill from a family member before trying that.

Thats what I did with mine, you can drill it at a bit of an angle too so it fits better when you've got the strut attached to the mount. Only be careful you don't drill too deep, you'll go through the top of the bonnet.

The bolt is pretty long, nearly an inch. I think im going to cut a bit off.

Don't forget to paint the drilled hole with some primer to keep the rust at bay

I knew that but completely forgot haha. Good thing i've got the paint in the shed!
