New to Skoda

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Am new to Skoda and so new to the site!

Currently have on order a brilliant silver, 1.6 green line SE - completely standard with no options. The build completion date is the 23rd Jan 2012.

The options I would have wanted are Bluetooth and MDI for my iPhone 4s, but because I only ordered it this week and need it quickly, standard is all I could get!

I have read the forums and seen the links concerning retrofitting MDI.

Questions:

Some links I have read suggest re coding? Really?

As I use my iPhone as my iPod I don't want to locate the MDI port in the armrest, is there anywhere suitable near the gear stick / passenger footwell at knee level - ie near where you would expect to fit a cradle for a mobile phone?

Should I buy the kit from the dealer and get them to fit it or is there a recommended and reliable kit from the Internet (eBay) and fit it myself - this is where the coding question above starts to scare me?

Second question - I understand that I haven't got Bluetooth included for my phone, but does the steering wheel have controls for it - just not activated?

Is there a way of retrofitting a Bluetooth module to get it to work?

If not what aftermarket kit is generally recommended and reliable?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to briskoda :)

I retrofited bluetooth phone to my SE, bought the VW/SKODA unit from ebay, fitted myself all for about £300.

It works great and yes you can use the steering wheel controls except the top right button which on my car could not be reprogramed. from what I remember some things worked on the steering wheel without reprogmaming! but you could not access your phone through the MFD (multi function device). you could do all the phone functions on the bolero display though.

So you can fit the bluetooth with no reprograming and save yourself some money.

I nearly ordered MDI but glad I didn't as the Bolero headunit is plenty sufficient with it's 6 disc changer and SD card slot.

The changer will accept MP3 discs so you could probably get 7-8 albums on a CD? Add to that a 4gb SD card and that's a helluva lot of music, with no additional outlay.

Have a hard wired handsfree kit so can't comment on BT.

The SD slot can take an SD/SDHC card up to 32GB which, at around 5MB a time say, will hold 6,400 tracks, which is a lot of CDs/DVDs - and NO MOVING PARTS! I paid less than £20 for my 32GB card so it's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. I can't see CDs still being around in a few years time so wouldn't have chosen that option.

Anybody tried 64GB card? I used to have 16GB, now I have 32GB and ordered 64GB from E-bay just to see whether it'd work.

Hi Sensonic,

Please post your results. I've got a Superb Elegance coming in a few weeks time and was going to order a 32Gb card but that might now depend on your experiment result.

Rgds.

Thanks for the advice so far.....

I've been doing more research and "think" that the following is true:

My bolero head unit can have the MDI retrofitted but buying a genuine part will work best and can be self installed without having to be recoded?

There is no existing Bluetooth module in my SE so to fit one that would work with the multifunction steering wheel would have to be completely from scratch and would be more involved than I originally thought / planned. So might be easier to get a parrot kit fitted instead and forego using the steering wheel controls.

Has anyone fitted a factory spec Bluetooth module from scratch into an SE with a bolero unit?

Hey, Sensonic,

Did you try the 64GB card and what was the result? Anyone else tried a 64GB SD card in a Columbus?

Simon
