Standard intercooler. where does it get it's cool air?

Featured Replies

Does anyone else think that the fabia vrs original intercooler is seriously hidden away from cool air or any air??

Is there anyway of getting more cool air at it?

I know for more power it's essential for a bigger intercooler but I'm just running a remapped vrs and not bothered about any more power, just feel that the intercooler needs to be cooler as it's stuck behind the corner of bumper.

It can be helped. More from a point of view of the SMIC being better at getting rid of the warm air. Hence the wheel arch vent mod that you've probably seen mentioned on here.

Ahh hah. That's why people do that, to get rid of warm air. Got you.

Time to blow the dust of the dremel!

Won't make all that much difference at this time of year, but does seem to help with heatsoak on our plentiful warm and sunny days ;)

Have a search, there will be some guides around the place. Most cut out a square then got a B&Q grille or similar and rivetted it into the arch liner. You need something over the cut-out to stop stones and road debris getting in there. Another option is from the Mk1 TT as they came with a proper vented arch, which you could butcher and use.

You can also try opening up the fog light surround or remove the fog lights altogether to try and help airflow.

^^^ was going to say trimming the fog surround. More chance of damaging the intercooler from stones etc. But could fit some black mesh in to help.

Yep, sure - that can help. You often see a higher than average number of Fabias at RR days with no offside fog surround ;)

Basically because there's then a more direct source of airflow for the SMIC. But as said, it would be highly recommended to fit some fine mesh if you intend to run like this on the road.

Mmmm! Like this idea.

You could also look to run a section of flexible pipework from the front of the SMIC to the front of the bumper. Think that's been tried before though, and it's not that easy to mount and secure something like that.

But to make the most of the SMIC, letting air in around the offside foglight, and then venting the wheel arch so it can more effectively disperse warm air would definitely be the way to go.
