Wireless woe's again

Featured Replies

Hey there, hopefully somebody with more knowledge than me with computers/laptops will help me out here!

Basically, i own a FujitsuSiemens Amilo Pro laptop, fairly old now (4-5years). Firstly, last year, the built in wireless stopped working (intermittant at times), messed around with router settings to no avail (changed channels).

Then, gratefully, Martin (2skodafamily) let me have a wireless adaptor. This worked wonders for months untill recently, where the same problem of the internet sometimes working, then eventually the internet went at dial up speed, now it doesnt work at all!

I know Vista is not the best for wireless, but do you really think this is the problem.

We have 2 other laptops in the household, and 2 xbox's. I turned all these off and i still have slow connection and still get the internet not working.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Dan

I had a virus that was making my old laptop slow. maybe worth a scan? may also be worth opening task manager and check what applications are running.

Have you rechecked channel traffic congestion?

Never had any Vista wireless issues myself.

Have you checked your ISPs settings in your router?

Try a reboot.

Scanned for viruses - found 1

how do i check for traffic congestion?

when looking at isp settings what have i got to look out for?

cheers

Dan

If you have an Android or Apple phone, download wifi analyzer.

i got a blackberry but its very old so will take me till next week to load lol.

im logged into my router atm (sky) , is there anything i can check/do ?

Have a google for inSSIDer. It's a free download and will display all the wireless channel activity within range. I used it to and changed channels with great results.

Things to check are: VPI & VCI settings, MTU settings, password & log on settings.

If needs be do a hard reset on the router so that all of its settings are factory default and then reenter them again.

Do the other 2 laptops work at a reasonable speed?

If Yes: then the issue is with your laptop

If No: then a router/ISP / wifi issue.

If you use a bit of cat5 and plug your laptop into the router does it run faster?

If yes: then you have a wifi issue

If no: then your laptop/windows install may have an issue (virus, firewall, malware, etc).

What happens if you ping the routers IP address from your laptop? are the responses a few ms, or up in the hundreds? repeat by also pinging something like news.bbc.co.uk

When i use my extension cable (cat 5) the laptop works a dream.

All other wireless devices connect to the router fine, even my phone which is in the same range as my laptop.

So looks like i have an issue with my wireless bits inside my laptop then?

I'll have a check on my laptop in a mo to check the ping info, using the other one atm as it connects fine!

Might be time to do a back up and then format & reinstall every thing so the computer is fresh as a daisy and you know if you've formatted it you won't have any nasties clogging up your system.

If its only on wireless then points to channel issues.

I wouldn't do this extreme measure until checking that 1st. Bets are the channel used or those either side are clogged up.

my ping to bbc.co.uk is currently 30ms, but the laptop wireless is working fine atm, when it plays up i'll try again

Update: it played up already, in cmd mode i typed in ping www.bbc.co.uk

had 4 error messages ''timed out''

internet stopped working.

swapped the wireless stick into a diff usb port, started working again, but then few moments later stopped, swapped it back into a diff usb port and now works again (prob stop in a moment lol)

Log into the router. On your wireless settings page your channel will either be auto or set as 11.

Change to a less congested or empty channel as seen in the app advised above and save the settings. The router will reboot and you should see an improvement.

If you have important files or course work you should back them up either on a USB stick, CD or external HDD, because if your computer needs to go for a repair you could lose everything! :o
