Superb II 59 w/Upgraded Sound System

Featured Replies

Hi all, just traded in my Octavia VRS Limited edn for a Superb II 59 plate CR170 with the '10 speaker upgraded sound system'.

Im really happy with the new car apart from the Sound system which sounds horrible compared to the old Octavia.

Any music with a bit of a baseline causes vibration (or distortion?) in the front speakers even at 50% volume.

Ive done plenty of google searches and also searched here for a solution and cant seem to find anything apart from a few guides on taking apart the door panels etc and speaker replacement, but im not even sure if these were for the 10 speaker setups like what i have.

Im trying to work out my options here and from what ive already learnt it looks like the speakers are pretty non standard in size so its not a case of dropping in some replacement generics which is about as far as my skills as a mechanic stretch :)

Ive found a few mounting brackets but non for the 10 speaker systems, i assume each front door in my car has 3 speakers (2 + tweeter)? Knowing what the speaker sizes are would be a first step i guess and i dont fancy taking the doors off just to find out :)

Id like to get this sorted out and live in the Watford / Uxbridge area. Anyone know any decent specialists i can trust my new baby with in the area or if anyone has any help with regards to the above i guess it would be a step in the right direction...

thanks in advance :)

I can say it's not the speakers for sure.I have the sound system speakers and a dynaudio amp and they sound wonderful. The only problem I have is that because of the hard bass my front windows make horibble sounds(they hit the window rail),I'll get that fixed at the dealer soon. So,it's the same problem at you or maybe it's because of the settings(coding) or it's the amplifier.

I forgot to mention i have the columbus unit with the sat nav etc all included. hope its not that ! ;)

To be homest it sounds more like vibration coming from the door panels at certain frequencies...

Will do some testing tomorrow and report back,,,,

I had a similar problem with vibration and distortion (Bolero unit) - dealer solved very quickly after I "pointed" them at Skoda service bulletin 2021846/2.

Thanks for all the feedback. Just thought id share what ive learnt this morning after comments suggested it was more likely to be vibrations rather than a speaker/amp issue.

I wired up a signal generator to check out each side and its just the front doors that seem to be affected on my car.

The right front is vibrating at appx 68Hz around the bass speaker area and the left door appx 100hz around the handle you pull on to close the door.

I notice this at about 55% vol and its pretty bad @ 75% +

Other frequencies are pretty stable at much higher volumes so it looks like i have a problem with something vibrating in the door panels, which is good news i guess :)

Obviously i wont know exactly what is resonating until the panels com off but id hazard a guess at loose panels or wires and possibly a loose speaker/mount on the right door.

Think ill give this a go myself and if successful ill put up a guide once i have all the bits i need. :)

I was thinking of using a Butyl mastic to secure any loose cables,

You should also try some Dynamat or some other sound dampening materials. You will get a deeper bass and an almost vibration-free car

Yeah just been to a local halfords for lunch and they had a similar lining. Ill check out dynamat online and order some up.

Ive been sat in the work carpark with my signal generator trying to isolate exactly where the vibrations are coming from and also confusing people who are wondering what the rumbling sound is :) . Located the vibration that i thought was the base speaker on the right.

Theres a light fitting on the underside of my door (illuminates the ground white and red to back when door open). The light fitting was loose and rattleing about like crazy at low frequencies. Wiggling it about has seemed to fix the majority of problems on that side but it isnt exactly secure so may not be a permanent fix.

Gonna use some foam backed tape on that first and see how much it improves things on the way home.

That was the most prominent source of noise so im glad ive located that one.

Will let ya know how i get on but i reckon ill dynamat anyway if i cant fix the other sources so easily.

Progress at last ;)
