octavia 1.9 tdi ASV engine code

Featured Replies

Hello Chaps,

Octavia 2004, 1.9 tdi, engine code ASV, old type of diesel engine doesnt start. When you flick key, engine turns over and over but doesnt fire up.

There are no fault codes loged in 01 engine and 17 imobiliser. Cam belt has been checked and timing correct. Any ideas?

Regards

immobiliser fault would have been first guess..... but normally you would get a light on the dash (dunno about a fault being logged though).

At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs - does it have fuel?

Is the battery nicely charged - a duff battery can cause the starter motor to spin too slowly sometimes.

Similar thoughts - Ref the battery, does the interior light dim when the starter's turning over, because that tends to point to low charge.

Is there fuel at the injectors?

hello chaps, thanks for your suggestions

Yep, it does have fuel and confirmed this by sucking small amount of diesel to fuel filter pipe supply and battery nicelly charged. Yes fuel does come to injector pipes.

I was thinking of ecu down and not seing faults or the crankshaft sensor if they have one?

What you think chaps?

Anti shudder valve stuck? Search the forum to find further info.

Seem to remember a relay 109 under the dash being a cause of non starting on TDI's. mbames should be able to clarify?

109 can cause various electrical issues. I can't recall if specifically it prevents starting, but I can't see why not. That is one particular gremlin that has not visited my car yet!

hello, thanks for the advice sko chaps,

ok, but if the 109 relay doesnt work it will cut power supply to engine ecu and this will not allow me to connect diagnostic computer to my engine ecu and i will not be able to read fault codes and data?

Where is shredder valve on this engine?

found anti shredder valve info, will check this tommorow and let you know

thanks chaps

Yes - relay 109 will prevent starting if it is faulty. IIRC, diagnostics will be able to talk to other modules but not the engine.

Glow plugs?

The immobiliser works by controlling a solenoid valve on the fuel pump, check the wiring to the fuel pump, it could be this.

Also I remember something about the pressure relief valve on the fuel pump causing problems if it sticks open, can't remember if this would stop it starting though.

It doesn't have a lift pump so there is no fuel pump fuse.

Ah that must be petrol engines only then.

Hello chaps,

sorry for late reply, we have a goarr now. Have checked everything and beyond what you guys have suggested and everything appeared fine. Yesterday, after i tryed to start engine i realised that engine was willing to start on first attempt but after that i also realised that engine was spinning faster than normal. It sounded like engine never had compression or very litlle. Ive pulled the cambelt covers off to check timing but spot on! THEN i decided to check engine oil, which was a correct level but oil on deepstick was very thick!! ive decided to drain small amount but appeared to be like jelly. Then i drained rest of jelly, Ive pulled sump off and amount of like carbon jelly residue that was accumulated round oil pick up pipe was unbelivable.

Ive removed oil pick up pipe and soaked it in diesel bath and cleaned it with brake cleaner, put sump pan on, filled it up with oil and replaced oil filter and tryed to start engine. Ive cranked the engine several times, and every time it appeared that engine was willing more and more to fire up. Eventually engine started and was litlle bit ratlly for about couple of minutes and then start to run as normal.

Now, what i dont understand is car has been serviced 5k ago and how did this happen? and car had regular oil changes on every 10k?

does anyone have idea?

regards

Mixing mineral oil with synthetic can cause the oil to turn to jelly.

The oil can also turn to jelly if the chemical pack in the oil is used up.

What oil was in it?
