Front Wheel Screech

Featured Replies

Guys,

I have a 57 Octavia 1.9 estate.

Yesterday evening, after starting up the car and pulling out of a car park, I had a high pitched screech when I had full lock on. All from the front. Literally 30 seconds later and the noise had gone.

This morning, when pulling out of the drive (from cold), I had the same. Again probably 30 secs later, gone. Same again leaving work tonight but seemed to be a little worse and lasted longer. It was always when turning.

Just gone out to try again (from cold) and its now screaming as I was driving down the road. Didn't drive long enough to see if it went but will in the morning.

Any ideas? Could it be bearings? Car is about 90k miles (apart from the engine which blew up and cost me 4k 3 months ago!)

Thanks

Most likely a stone caught in the brake/ back plate. Try a few hard stops forwards and backwards and it'll probably dislodge. Failing that, wheel off and see if you can find it/yank it out.

If it is just a screech from the front maybe the alternator/belt under a high load?

If you are sure that is is indeed the wheel, then the above stone scenario is likely.

Could it be the ABS at all ? I only suggest this because I've noticed a similar noise from my car when one of the wheels lost traction.

Sounds very alternator/power steering belt to me! Conditions all fit! Damp and cold, high load on alternator, high load on steering (hydraulic oil cold and viscous).

Sounds like a belt is slipping.
