Fabia 1422cc TDI PD diesel engine oil filler problem

Featured Replies

Today, before launching into space with Mrs EM, I checked the oil (it's always ok and indeed was this time too) and thought I'd take the filler cap off and check for any possible signs of 'mayo', the white crud that can form if you get a build up of condensation in your engine. We've done lots of short trips this last couple of weeks and I clean out what I can see if this is the case. Anyhoo....started turning the oil cap to remove it and found to my dismay that it suddenly went loose and canted over to one side refusing to come off. It became clear the whole filler cap and the pipe joining it to the cambox cover was loose under the 'top hat' plastic engine cover (sorry no photos). So, having removed the platic engine cover I could see the problem. The interconnecting pipe that goes from the filler cap down under the plastic cover to the cambox cover had come undone from the cambox itself. The neoprene boot that goes around the filler cap and pipe was all over the place and needed a good clean up and inspection, but that was ok. In short, there didn't appear anything wrong but my filler cap was very tight to undo and I suspect this put undue pressure on the clips that hold the pipe in place in the cam box cover. Even so, this seems a bit strange and took me over twenty minutes (and a set of vinyl tech gloves) to fix when I was in a bit of a hurry. Anyone else had this problem? But, given that in the over 3 and a half years I've had the car, this is the only real niggle, I'm happy!

45,000 miles, never yet needed to take off my oil filler cap as it hasnt used a drop of oil......I will check mine anyway.

Just replaced SWMBO thermostat in her 1.4MPI Fabia. Thermostat had fallen to pieces because the plastic retainers for the spring clip had snapped.Took all of 10 mins and a twenty quid replacement part, easy.

Hi raisbeck, yes many things seem very simple do on these Fabia's. Thrilled with mine, as no doubt you are with yours. ;)

If you remember I fitted these pipes n stuff as I did not have the engine cover, it's easy to make a mistake fitting these

Seb, I remember you doing something but can't recall what pipes they were?
