HELP! Big Problem! Wipers

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Please help! :)

Got in my car to drive to Uni today. Half way there and decide to clean windscreen, all was fine. Some spray on road so used them again, I was holding it towards me to spray the screen and then the back wiper kicked in too!

Thought nothing of it and then used wipers again later on the same journey and nothing! Won't spray, won't even move. When I push the stalk forward or back it only operates the rear! I know it's not forzen as I've already used them today, but now no washer fluid comes out either.

I've tried turning the car off and on but no luck!

I'm 40 miles from home and I hope it doesn't rain on the way home later!!!

Please help :)

Try the fuse dude

As above.

Fuse no. 41 - Front wipers

Fuse no. 32 - Rear wiper

But no. 15 seems to be the one. (Cleaning system)

Thanks guys, am i right in thinking that the fuses are on the right hand side by the door. On the end of the dash?

Will the fuse need replacing or just pushing back in or something? Never replaced a fuse before?!

Thanks again :)

yes those are the fuses

essentially they are pieces of metal that current normally flows through and if there is too much current - ie caused by extra load of a frozen motor - the fuse melts to break the connection and make sure the car doesn't go up in flames.

you'll need a new one to get it working again.

and it'll need to be the right rating - should be a number on the end of it

if you're lucky there may be some spare ones in the cover panel

Legend, thanks pasty boy for your help. Will have a look after my lectures!

Alternatively if there's no spares, as long as the rating is the same then they're interchangable. There's usually a little diagram on the inside of the fuse cover which will indicate what each fuse is for, you can just take one from another fuse holder and put it in for the wipers to get you home as long as it's the same rating. I.e. if it's the same rating for something like the foglights that you never use, then just grab that one and replace it later :)

true a swap is an option until you can get to somewhere to buy some new ones

this says its a 10A fuse in position 15

fusepanel1-609x400.gif

meaning in theory if you can do without

  • brake lights
  • Interior lights
  • reversing light
  • rear wiper

you should be fine

i'd leave the other 10A fuses alons as those seem to control serious things :D

I swapped it for the interior lights and it worked a treat! I firstly replaced it with number 14 by mistake and that was the diesel control unit! The car woulnt start :( but then soon realised the error in my ways!

Thanks again, now need to replace my 10A fuse for interior lights :)

exactly the same happened to me today. Swapped 20amp fuses but nothing happened, popped on here and heres the answer!

thanks all.

I invested in two BIG boxes of fuses at Halfords - much cheaper in the long term than buying small packets and handy having purpose designed boxes to store them.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but a trip to Parkinsons, soooo much cheaper than Halfords.

I think I paid £6.99 for a box of 100 a while ago? Whatever they're now £7.99:

Cheaper per fuse too than Euro Car Parts (unexpectedly):

These are new!:

The Halfords Assorted LED Blade Fuses pack contains approximately 30 fuses with built in LED indicator, which lights up when the fuse is blown.

However only 30 compared to 100/120 in the ordinary packs.

What size are the blade fuses in the fuse box, ie common or mini, as in the first and second links above?

Both - look at the diagram above.

Ooops! Thank you. I will ask my son to buy minis as well when he is next near a Halfords.

DRJ - that actually looks a very reasonable price, thanks.
