Creaking Noise Is Driving Me Mad!

Featured Replies

Okay so I've had a strange creaking noise coming from the front end of the car for a while. I have replaced the track rod ends, droplinks, console bushes (powerflex), front control arm bush (powerflex), FARB bushes (SuperPro) and top mounts/bearings. I've had the lower ball joints suggested which I might still do but I can't be sure if they are causing the problem. Also the rear beam bushes have not been changed yet if this could be considered a possible factor.

The creaking noise only occurs below 30mph roughly, mainly noticeable when manouvering/cornering however it is also happening when I move off from both a standstill and a rolling start. It is not the drivers seat as I've thoroughly checked it and lubricated the springs underneath. It honestly sounds as if something is under strain. Short of stripping it all down and regreasing all the bushes etc I can't think of anything else to do.

Honestly any suggestions/ideas etc please put them forward.

Cheers,

Michael

could be an engine mount or the gearbox mount. Short of that it could be a strut itself.

Gearbox mount has been replaced with a SuperPro equivalent and I've got KW Variant 1 Inox coilovers

have you checked/cleaned and greased the coilies?

I gave them a quick wipe down at the weekend, is there any particular parts I should grease?

Id grease up the threads and between the top and bottom contact surface of the springs.

Okay cheers mate I'll give it a go at the weekend

Mine creaks at the front, and it's the coilovers.

You're on KW's ?

Mine are AP's but creak.

With the bonnet shut, push on the back in the middle (near windscreen) and that should be the noise you refer to. It drives me insane!

Yeah i'm on KW's. Found any solution to the creaking?

Really the bonnet? I'll need to give that a go. Found any way of stopping it?

I have the same when on full lock running APs - please post if you find the solution!

:dull:

I also have a creaking/squeaking from the dash - sounds like it's coming from the steering column but it stops when you push your left leg against the centre console.... :dull:

The bonnet is the only place i can find that makes that noise. I was going to use some sort of high temp foam to try and sort it out but never got round to it.

On my car the drivers chair creaks, drives me mad! if i move the seat forward and then back into it's original spot it will stop then a day later the creak will come back.

I'm going to spend this weekend cleaning and greasing the coilovers and the console bushes if I can get in at them.

As for the noise from the dash I sometimes get a very high pitched vibration coming from the centre console however I've ot been able to identify what is causing it. If I were you I'd have a look at the panel underneath the steering wheel, I know mines vibrates badly over rough spots.

Had a quick look at the bonnet last night, could get it to make the noise you described so guess it can't be that causing the noise I'm hearing.

Try removing the front panel from the underside of the drivers seat, if you look underneath the base there is 2 springs I think, give them a good blast with some WD40 and that should help, it did for me anyway.

KW/Awesome sent me out some plastic sleeving to go over the springs to reduce noise.

They done it FOC :)

Has it done much too reduce the noise, any pictures? I think I saw something on this a while back

I have the same noise but only when I'm going really slow and on full lock, mines only lowered 40mm on springs. Its the drop links scrubbing according to a guy at work, had the same problem with his missus' car and he said he put puma ones on or something there a straight swap but i just live with the noise lol

I noticed the droplink was catching on the arch liner so I'll be trimming the liner slightly this afternoon however that does not explain the creaking sound at low speed in a straight line. A friend of mien suggested changing the PAS fluid, not sure how much good it'll do but its worth a shot.

The main cause after all else.......is that the ARB bushes need well lubing with Copper grease between the ARB and rhe bush....as the ARB rotates in the bush!!!........

AS for the centre of the dash squeek....there are whole topics on this in the tech section..linky.....

The ARB bushes were thoroughly greased not long ago along with everything else. I've read through that thread before, it seems whenever you sort one noise, two more start

Spent all day Saturday trying to find the source of this creaking noise, long story short I haven't.

I got the wheels off, checked all the bushes, which still had plenty of copper grease from when they were fitted, even the ARB bushes so gave them some more and moved on.

I then cleaned the coilovers and found the driver side spring had been rubbing as the underside of the spring was worn to the bare metal.

I put some plastic pipe over the spring below, taped it all up then greased the entire spring. Upon checking the passenger side there it is slightly worn but not as heavily as the driver side. I greased that side aswell and wound the coilovers up 2 threads.

I then had a look at where the droplinks were catching the wheel arch liner and trimmed it so they would no longer catch.

Turns out the driver side droplink has somehow burst so had to take it off, regrease the ball unit and secure the rubber.

Only fitted them last weekend!

Anyway went on to check the PAS fluid, just under halfway and fluid seemed okay so didn't need to do anything there.

I had hoped that the sound might just have been the spring scrapping but appears not, certainly it isn't as loud when manoeuvring but it is still present when moving at low speed in a straight line.

Bearing all this in mind does anyone have any further suggestions?

I have/had a similar noise and read somewhere to remove the fuse cover from the end of the dash and slightly loosen the bolt on the beam that runs behind the dash. When I looked there were two obvious bolts that I could get to. I loosened them slightly and I am sure the creaking noise has significantly reduced. May be worth a try?

Never heard about this though will definately give it a go at the weekend, I'm also going to check all the torque's of the bolts for the subframe etc and other suspension components
