Fuel pump issues

Featured Replies

My Fabia vrs 2004 started misfiring a few weeks ago. It only did it once then was fine. Last week it just went dead at a junction. Half an hour later it spluttered into life and was fine again. Just in case I changed the fuel filter. Last nght it packed up agin after running well for a few days. I havn't heard the fuel pump squirt when the ignition is turned on and there is no diesel to the filter when cranked. This seems a bit thick on my part but I havn't a clue where to look for access to the pump or where the pump relay is. Can someone please give me a bit of advice as I've trawled the forums to no avail. Thanks in advance!

pump relay is under the drivers side dash, and the pump i believe is in the engine bay on the side of the head by the fuel filter area.

BTW I love my vRS....had it from new, done 120,000miles with no issues.

It has Leon splitter and PD160 intake. Eiback rear struts and Belstein sport lowered springs all round. I've modified the grille with carbon fibre instead of the chrome and added the new vRS badge from the Octavia front and rear and it is chipped to just shy of 170bhp with a Pipercross filter and Allard power-pipe replacing the EGR.

Now it's at the side of the road waiting to be towed a few hundred yard home to be fixed. Can you help please!

ive replied to your other thread.

Thanks. I'll have a look tomorrow and hopefully get the car towed back.

I've noticed that some have described the pump as actually being in the tank. I was a bit confused!

I think some are ie the sdi diesels but im sure the vrs has a tandem pump which is in the engine bay.

Fuel pump relay is on the relay plate under the dash above the pedals. It is in position 4. The pump is a lift pump and is in the tank with the sender (below the rear seat).

Another relay that can cause problems is the DI system relay in position 15

Thanks Matt

I hope you don't mind me mentionning, I checked your My Project link. It has http:// twice before the address which is causing an OpenDNS error. If you edit the hyperlink and remove the first http:// it will go to the right forum. Cheers

I think I was looking in the wrong place earlier. I flipped down the access cover for the diagnostic plug under the steering column expecting to find it there. It was freezing it was dark and I was a bit cheesed off. Hopefully start to make some progress in the morning.... thns for the response, appreciated!

Got the car back home ok (a bit of pushing). Located the pump under the seat (Thank you Briskoda!) and checked for power to the terminals which seemed to show ok but the battery was pretty low.

With the help of a useful mate with a big diesel and heavy duty jump leads connected the leads, ignition on, his engine running for 10minutes or so to feed my battery. Meanwhile disconected the diesel feed to the fuel filter and used a syphon to suck diesel through and use this to re-prime the filter. (I also disconnected the clipped pipes to pour in the diesel....sorry I can't describe the technical bit here as I'm not sure what it is. It's the connector which has 2 pipes to it which sites on top of the filter, separate to the feed and send pipes.).

Revved my mates engine to 2000rpm or so and cranked mine until it fired up. Once running it seemed fine which I thought must be due to the pressure in the system drawing fuel. I decided to disconnect the connector to the fuel pump while still running to test my theory. After several minutes it spluttered to a halt as it had originally. I thought the original fault was definitely to do with the pump or relay at this stage.

With the intention of going through the same process we reconnected jump leads and I turned on the ignition to feed the battery again and low and behold.... a healthy squirt from the fuel pump as it primed the system. I'm not sure what has happened but all seems perfect now after a 30 mile run. I can only think that there must have been a bad connection unless something has reset somewhere with the battery dying. All my on-board computer and clock has reset, etc. Could an airlock have caused the problem, which syphoning has cured somehow? But most unusual is that I've got my squirt back on ignition and that's all that matters!! :) Hopefully this hasn't been too boring and might be useful to someone else!! Cheers

Just thought I'd mention.... My rear struts are Belstein and the springs Eibach sports alround. Got it the wrong way round earlier....not important but I should get my facts straight eh?

This means that the battery was disconnected at some stage. Or you could have a bad connection somewhere.
