Possible gearbox problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Well I've got a problem with what could be the gearbox don't not sure, I changed a faulty dual mass fly wheel & clutch over to a solid 1 last year, I drive to London from the NE every 2 weeks, now I haven't had a problem until a few weeks ago when coming back home & dropping down the gears I came out of 5th & it wouldn't go into any gear. So I've changed the clutch & solid fly as I thought that was faulty to a Dual Mass 1 today, also I should mention the spriget baring I think that's what it was called had shattered in the gearbox but got it replaced, so when I took it out of the garage it felt fine & a nice bite point on the clutch but after a 15min drive I came out of 5th & yet again it wouldn't find a gear!

It's a strange 1 as if when it warms up & stays in 5th it seams to jam, I'm guessing the solid fly wheel conversion wasn't to blame now so please any help would be good so I can take it back to the garage on Monday, I've had the car in the garage for nearly 2 weeks & I need it for work so I'm loosing out on money as I can't get to jobs being self employed.

Thanks Marc.

Will it go into gear when stationary, with the engine off?

Yeah it goes in, with the solid fly wheel with the engine running as I went to put it into gear it would pull off, it doesn't do that but it's still very notchie, it just seams to be bad when I drive in 5th for any length of time.

Release bearing shattered? Spigot bearing is in the end of the crankshaft.

It had a new spigot with the dual mass & clutch, I'll mention the release bearing to the garage & see what they say, thanks & hopefully it will be sorted.

Wonder why they changed the spigot bearing, it's not normal practice.

Almost certainly because they tried to fit the transmission when out of line with the engine - this nearly always breaks the spigot bearing. Dumbo mechanics, probably.

rotodiesel.

So with all the new parts I've had fitted & the problem is still there what do you think could be the problem roto? Thanks.

Probably not undone the front mounting and tipped the engine backwards.
