I guess that depends on what kind of dog you have? In most cases, the answer is yes..

A Collie so should be OK. Any idea about dog guards for the hatch?

I had a Superb twindoor and our Rhodesian Ridgeback (much larger than the collie) had plenty of room!

Yes, I bought a small dog cage (with sloping side to fit snuggly behind the rear seat in my hatch) for our Cavalier and it works a treat. It sticks up slightly higher than the parcel shelf so I remove this when I have the cage in the boot - although I would remove it anyway to let light into the boot when the dog is there. I have posted on this before with links to the cage I bought - sure it's there somewhere under the Search function. I did try a few dog guards before I opted for the cage - none of the guards fitted snuggly to the car, and our dog always managed to squeeze through. She prefers the safety of the cage anyway.
