Removing interior rear view mirror?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a technique to remove the mirror stalk from the glass without damaging anything,(well possibly the stalk)

The mirror is in the wrong place for me. Maybe I'm too tall, I want to fit a mirror in a different position.

What year of car it it? As far as I know all modern vag cars have a metal ring imbedded in the windscreen which the mirror stalk attaches to. They are longer just glued to the screen

This may sound silly, but have you tried adjusting the height of your seat?

The mirror stalk is fitted on to a metal boss that is bonded to the the glass, you can remove the mirror assembly pretty easily but it's really not a good idea to mess with the boss as you can break the glass and gluing on a second mirror boss is rarely successful.

To remove the mirror assembly: twist the base of the stalk where it meets the glass -it will then just pop off at about 90 degrees rotation. DO NOT wrench, pull or waggle or try to prise the mirror off as there is a SERIOUS risk of breaking the windscreen.

Failing that you could get one of those extra mirrors that driving instructors use that stick on with a suction cup like a sat-nav.

Thanks Greenstripe!

Yes the seat is in lowest position. Too late to advise me not to pull it, I've already cracked the screen. I wasn't too worried though, it had flaws that showed in sunlight, plus signs of delamination.

The new screen is a Pilkington one (insurance job) far superior to OEM one. Fitter left off the mirror, but as you said there is a ring embedded although it doesn't block much view.

I'm now using a suction cup type while I think about something more permanent. Perhaps I'll screw one to the panel where some models have a sunglasses holder.
