Why did I buy an Octavia 4x4?

Featured Replies

The first time out towing with the Octavia after it has been run in. What a good towcar it is, plenty of power and with lots of power to spare. I do tow with a ratio of 82%.

At just under 1,500 revs in 6th gear a nice steady 50 mph for normal roads, take it up to 60mph dual carriageway and it is only has 1,750 revs, put the accelerator down to take the incline and up to 2,000 revs and 65mph, oops got to ease off now, illegal!!

Very pleased with the car and the wife likes it, she said in three years I can trade it in......... for the Octavia 3!! (it should be out by then)

Glad u like it and the power :) now emagine towing ur caravan with a vrs :)

I would opt for 4X4 every time rather than the extra power of a vRS when towing on wet grass. JMTPW from an ex-caravanner. :)

Glad you like it. I agree that the Octavia is a good towcar, I tow at a ratio of 88% and providing the nose weight is right the car pulls the caravan very well indeed. On my way back from the dealer near Shaftesbury after picking up the caravan, there is a hill coming out of a village with a 20mph limit at the bottom. With the car solo I can be doing ahem... 80 mph at the crest of the hill using D in the gearbox without resorting to kickdown either, with the caravan behind I decided to lift off at 60 mph near the top of the hill as there is a nasty bump. A more than capable performance I'd say.

You say you are towing at a ratio of 82% but the towcar.info website shows your combo as having a ratio of 78%, either way good performance guaranteed and a good choice.

I wouldn't use sixth if towing.

Too much strain on the gearbox, clutch and dual mass flywheel.

Fifth will see slightly higher RPM / fuel consumption but will be much better for the mechanicals.

What's Tow Ratio?
