Warranty Direct - What do people think?

Featured Replies

My skoda has ticked over 105,000 miles. Im not going to tempt fate and say no major bills, but you get the idea! ;)

I have had the car for 2 years now (since 70,000 miles), but with reports of turbos etc failing I am wondering if I should seriously consider one? I have always been very careful with the the turbo, allowing it to warm up and cool down, and make sure the car gets serviced on time, every time.

I am now doing around 25-30k a year, 90% motorways and dual carrige ways and again 80% of that is taking it easy pootling along for the fuel economy.

What are peoples thoughts on warranties from Warranty Direct etc? Is it worth it for the £350 off quid? :)

There was another thread about WD, might be worth looking at the comments in that. Personally I don't Trust them but others have had good service with them.

I asked them for a quote when my warranty ran out after 3 yrs, they quoted 350 but after e mails and phone calls pestering me they came down to 250 but didn't bother in the end.

I had one and claimed with no issues. If you want a warranty, then they are the people i'd go with as long as you get a policy with Wear and Tear cover included.

They quoted me around £350 for my octy,i would rather save that money & put it towards a repair as req,im sure they said they wouldnt cover a car with 100,000miles+ (maybe wrong though, may cost more instead).

Pretty sure they will cover it but from memory they will cover labour/diagnostics but only a percentage of parts...

If I remember right you paid 10% at 60k, 20% at 70k etc. On that basis I probably wouldn't bother with a policy like that on a high mileage car...

Worth making sure of the terms regarding that as you wouldn't want to get caught out

In some ways I can see the comfort of having a warranty, makes for less hassle in bargaining over a repair cost for instance. Trouble is I am not sure how entirely hassle free it would be. I want to make some mods to the car that would almost certainly not be covered. I assume prior damage would not be covered and nor would consequential damage so there are probably lots of billable items that would end up landing back with me. On the other hand, the idea of forking out literally £1,000s for a new DSG, turbo, engine, box of electronics etc. isn't very appealing and these headline items probably would be covered (without a remap I suppose?).

On balance I think I will just stick money away to cover unforeseen costs and take my own chances.

Having the remap would be a problem I imagine, that would write off any chance of engine trouble. One has to ask - would they check though?

As mentioned - stick the money away. Since you've already had the car two years you'd could have potentially saved £700 already.

Another year and you'll have enough to replace the turbo if it ever goes.

If it doesn't thats over a £1000 towards your next car or your reserve pot for future repairs.

Saying that I negotiated an extension from the standard 3 months to 12 months on an aftermarket warranty that came with my used Octavia. I recently claimed for a new turbo saving me £1000 (max claim limit) plus the £450 contribution from Skoda UK so it's already paid for itself.

The company is called Autoguard - well recommended.

At 100k, the mileage will indeed affect percentages of parts costs paid for under wear and tear.

Fair enough really.

They will however cover the labour fully.

If you're confident you can put the money to one side, it's probably worth doing it as £300 a year, every year would soon add up.

My recent experience , check what miles are covered , they only do cover for all parts up to 100k and you pay 50% of parts over ther 100k mark , then its £50 excess , so 2 items ie in my case a track rod end and wheel bearing cost £50 x2 =100 plus 50% on parts . They will change the cover down once you hit the 130k miles to onl;y cover for the engine and gearbox again 50% on parts plus excess but they pay labour . The max miles is 160k . You have to keep your reciepts and stamped service book , any monor missed item on service and they decline payment . If you take it to any garage other than Halfords , you have to get the repair authorised first , then have the work done , then pay yourself and claim the money back , they only pay Halfords direct
