Am I right in thinking Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5-30W would be most suitable?

If it meets the VW 507.00 spec you'll be fine.

I'm not sure if the PD105 1.9 TDi has a DPF (diesel particulate filter)? If so these engines must have the long life (VW 507.00) oil.

no DPF no, and as I have no prior experience of differences in variable/fixed service oils, I'd thought it best to check.....
