Is this the most expensive service ever?

Featured Replies

Dropped the car off for oil service and MOT at AMD Essex yesterday.

Picked it up today and the bill came to …

… £1500

This does include Eibach springs fitted, new CV boot fitted, remap and new clutch and DMF fitted though :giggle:

The clutch and remap are booked in for week after next. Remap would have been done yesterday had my clutch and DMF not been on the way out. I knew it needed doing sometime so I booked it in.

To summarise:

Oil service - £110

MOT - £55

CV boot fitted - £20 + £90 labour (1.5 hours)

Eibachs fitted - £300

Remap - £300

Cutch and DMF fitted - £590 (£320 parts (Sachs) + £270 labour)

Total: £1465

That's me skint for the rest of the year, and beyond. Hope it's worth it

Actually pretty cheap imo (in my opinion).. nice job :-)

Cheers.

I thought it was pretty good too considering they're tuning specialists and do these kind of mods and work day in day out.

£60 per hour labour in London (or just outside anyway) is pretty reasonable

Quote / job looks reasonable, ie I'd probably have to pay the same at the garage, however...

It's a good thing I bought a Sealey hydraulic spring compressor some years ago then. Cost GBP140 or so, but I can DIY all springs on my cars in under 2hrs, incl raising/lowering / access. Have done total of 12-16 springs/front shocks over the years, some upgrades, some front shock replacements. So that's a GBP800+ saved so far and counting

Oil service - VW507 oil is about GBP35/5L if you look around, less on offers, filters under a tenner, decent oil extractor is well under 1 oil service cost. Total DIY saving so far over 10 years / 2 cars about GBP1800+ and counting

CV boots - no special tools required, Superb ate 4 so far, Octy ate another 2 before it got rear-ended and written off, total saving GBP550+ and counting

Clutch job is not for faint hearted and I'd take it to workshop, as the gearbox weighs 96kg, but then Superb has no sign of clutch wear nor failure at 102k miles.

I'd add the usual brake pads and at least 2x TB to the list, mine is 2.5TDI and even that monster was doable at home provided you get a set of timing tools.

So if you ever fancy some DIY, the savings just about pay for the insurance on the car
