Gearbox oil

Featured Replies

I know there is a few thread's about regarding gearbox oil but I'm after some info.

I've just been down to TPS and got a price for the genuine oil, it's coming in at £77+VAT for 3L of it.

This seems a tad steep to me so I have been looking at different alternative's.

First one I've come across is Castrol Driveline Syntrax Universal, it's a fully synthetic SAE 75W-90 gear oil anybody ever used this oil and what do they make of it?

Or the other option as suggested by Opie Oils is Millers EP 75W-80 gear oil

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60224-millers-oils-ep-75w-80-gl5-high-quality-gear-oil.aspx

Which product would people recommend and is there any other's that I should look at or choose instead?

Regards

Adam

Its expensive as using the 5 speed oil (£5 a litre) makes the 6 speed overheat.

Cant comment if the il posted is ok.

Good ****

From what I've read I thought the oil had to be both API GL 4 & 5 not just 5?

Not sure on that, just know its been used and it's fine. Opie reccommend it :)

Yeah I noticed they did do when I found the millers one aswell. It was an old thread on here about the API, though I could of read it wrong, might of been 4 or 5 lol. I notice on Opie under the spec's and approvals there is a few VW ones on there.

Is there any difference or benefit from using a fully synthetic (Fuchs) to a mineral oil (Millers) any pro's and con's?

The five speed is plain old mineral oil, not fully synthetic like the six speed.

Fully synthetic vRS OEM gear oil in a five speed box is peachy btw. ;)

IMO the synthetic will always out perform the mineral. I'm going to order some now I think, as you say I noticed all those VW specs too! There's also a member who runs it and no issues :) don't see why it would really :)

I'm spoilt for choice now haha

I think I may go for the one you posted first of all, as you say a synthetic oil will always out perform a mineral based oil, I'm not really abusing the car 'much' atm in time, but I do intend on doing my first track day soon, but should I start getting into track day's etc I think I will purchase some more expensive 'box oil to help prolong the gearbox, that with doing oil changes more often.
