VCDS help cruise control activation?

Guys, I'm after a bit of advice if possible from any VCDS experts? About 6 months ago I fitted cruise in my wifes Golf GT, I posted information about that in this thread - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,33605.15.html -

Initially it didn't work and reviewing Ross tech wiki it appeared to be because of the 'BC' steering controller, however as I mention in the thread it started working on the trip home and touch wood has been fine since.

After running a log on my vRS and finding that it also has the 'BC' controller but also the lower 036 number (identical to the Golf) I sourced a cruise control stalk and fitted it. Tonight a friend attempted to code it, all was going well, following the previous procedure until we got to the 01 - Steering, this opened but the 'Coding II-11' button was not highlighted like all the others so we couldn't access it??? We then moved across to my friends car, also a mk2 vRS to see if it was an issue with VCDS, but we got the same thing, what's strange is that his is a slightly older car and the steering controller end's with an 'A'....... but he has cruise control which was retro fitted by Shark Performance? Just to test a theory we plugged the VCDS in to the Golf, and the 'Coding II-11' was available!
