Sharing AOL broadband connection

Featured Replies

We use routers for our students. Effectively self-dialling modems with built in firewalls that had handle several computers at once.

We found that students with modems deleted the password accidently on a fairly frequent occaision but they didn't find the system reset on the router so once it was programmed it just worked.

Thanks Ventmore-that looks really helpful link. Will print out and have a look. Why does a router make things easier? Sorry if that's a silly question but I just don't know much!

No probs mate.

A modem/router combination makes life easier because it is purpose built for the job. Basically, the modem inside the router dials the connection and keeps it live constantly. Each PC is then connected to the router with either a wired or wireless connection. The router will then supply the broadband to any PC which is connected to it, thus taking care of all the work for you. Also, most routers now come with a firewall, negating the need to run one on the PC. Not only that, but your actual machines are invisible to the internet...all anyone can see is the router.

It probably would be your best bet to get a router, however, if you're anything like me, you will want to get ICS working now anyway...just because it should :)

And by the way...questions are only silly if you know the answer :)

Cheers
