lowering just the front

Featured Replies

I carry heavy items all the time and the back of my car is lower than the front. what is the effect on handling/comfort of just lowering the front with an already weighed down back?

edit: thinking about no more than 30mm something like eibach springs or similar

The altnernative i was thinking is perhaps stronger rear springs but not sure if the estate has stronger srprings and fit.

The car is designed to carry weight over the rear axles (3 adults + luggage is approx 300KG) so if you carry heavy weight in the rear and it's loaded predominately over the rear axles, then it should be OK.

As far as the handling is concerned, surely if you're carrying a really heavy load, then caution should be on your mind and your speed adjusted accordingly. I wouldn't go messing with different springs & ride heights and it's vital for handling & tyre wear that the alignement is accurate.

Not telling you how to suck eggs, but if it's compromising the handling a great deal, maybe a trailer would be a better idea ?

I had this problem. I often carry 500-odd assorted poultry in the boot for outings and found that I couldn’t see much as the car was so low at the back. I studied over this problem and awoke Mrs Voline one night shouting “Eureka, what a cunning stunt!” Poor Val rushed to the bathroom in some confusion, but in my mind it was clear, mercury filled tyres were the answer!

I filled the rear tyres with Mercury and hey presto as my speed increases the centripetal action expands the tyre diameter and lifts the car. By the time I get to 127mph I can see out of the bonnet. If you quote my wifes name at Molten-Metals-R-Us you can get a discount on the usual £10k filling price.

Watch out you don’t let the mercury leak though, its hugely toxic. Whilst trying to get the poultry-heavy car out of a ditch wheel-spinning broke the seal on the tyre and covered our Edgar (who was pushing bless him) in the silvery stuff from head to foot. He was mad! The inside of the ambulance was blue on the way to hospital and he got rapidly worse. After diagnosis we discovered he had come down with the first recorded case of Mad Hatters disease through mercury poisoning in 120 years! How we guffawed at that. The irony was he used to love wearing a top hat with his Tuesday best as he could hide a chicken under it.
